The Official 2017 Italian Grand Prix Thread **Spoilers**
Discussion
Max to qualify well, then cause a massive first corner mess, taking out both Mercs and Vettel. Then Kimi can go on and win it.
More likely is:
One or both Red Bulls will have engine trouble.
Ferrari will qualify poorly after messing around trying to draft each other.
Alonso to qualify better than expected and then drop down to the back before parking it.
Jonathan Palmer will have some new excuses for his son's driving.
Ocon and Perez will give each other the cold shoulder.
Sky will devote another 45 minutes to pointlessly discussing Vettel's new contract.

McLaren-Honda will decide ahead of FP1 whether to reuse Alonso's Spa engine, which was found not to have any fault to cause Alonso to retire in Belgium, or to fit another, further-upgraded engine. The latter will incur at least 35 grid penalties. Either way, expect Fred to be unimpressed.
I'm calling a Mercedes 1-2 for this one the track suits the silver arrows & in qualifying trim they have the edge still, the race will be closer but the LH & VB will prevail.
I know Ferrari have a new engine but I can't see them making a big enough step to actually make more power than Mercedes.

Yeah I doubt the times will be any quicker than last year, what they make up in mechanical grip through the corners with the bigger tyres they will lose in drag. Might be able to run less wing though.
I remember the 2010 race being fascinating when JB was running a thing like a barn door but had his f-duct and he got such speed through and out of the corners Alonso couldn't get pat him with his tea tray wing. Drs isn't powerful here either so it will be interesting to see what people do.
I think Mercedes will edge it, their top speed is superior, I think Ferrari were running a bit more downforce in spa which didn't help but you could here the Ferrari donkey running out of puff at the end of the straight where the Merc kept pulling.

could do with a dodgy stewards' decision to spice things up a bit, but that never happens in Italy.
was discussing this weekends race at work today. Colleague pipes up with the potentially biased italian stewards comment. 10 place grid penalty for a car that's not red, etc.Has anything ever actually happened in the past to warrant this cynical view?

The other two key officials are nominated by the National Sporting Authority (ASN) of the country holding the race. These are the clerk of the course and an additional steward (who must be a national of the host nation). Both must be FIA Super Licence holders.

Interesting to hear Ferrari are using their new 3d printed steel pistols so are able to run more boost, let's see how this plays out!
PS how the hell do you 3d print steel?
Can't see how a 3D printed piston will help run more boost. Isn't boost limited by fuel and oxygen? If you run higher boost you need more fuel otherwise it is too lean and leads to detonation. As the fuel flow is limited doesn't that effectively limit the boost, not the strength or shape of the pistons?PS how the hell do you 3d print steel?
I'd have thought the only benefit of 3D printed pistons was the weight saving from a stronger structure using less metal.

Pat Symonds talked briefly about the 3D print pistons. IIRC they use Aluminium pistons at the moment, because they weight less. The steel printed ones will weight the same amount as the alloy ones. Steel is better because you can get a bigger bang without damaging the pistons.
I'll have a quick look see if I can find a clip. eta:couln't find it.

Tobi Gruner on twitter:
"According to AMuS information Ferrari will NOT run new engines at Monza."

I guess that a stronger lighter piston may allow them to run a higher compression ratio. Interesting if they don't run the new PU this weekend. Wonder if an old PU with higher oil usage is better than the new one with 3d printed pistons.

FP1 best sectors:
Ferrari missing a couple of tenths in S1 & 3 but losing a big chunk in S2. The Force Indias are the quickest cars in S1. Seems Bottas is missing some time in the second sector too.
Look at Vandoorne's second sector. Quicker than the FIs and as quick as the RBs. The speed ranges of the chicane and the Lesmos are where the McLaren is good at...
How are the cars looking track side anyone?

Look up Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM). Been around ages for metal parts, including the internals of jet engines. Allows shapes and properties that you cannot achieve using traditional methods.PS how the hell do you 3d print steel?
