Interesting figures. I'm sure on a year on year review you will get fluctuations. How well any one venue does will be dependent on multiple factors - such as whether a local boy is doing well, whether Ferrari or some other team are on the up, whether the circuit owners have come up with more competitive ticket deals etc.

TV is of concern though as that is a whopper of a fall.

It is, but I wonder how much of this is down to how the figures are calculated.

Bernie used to have some odd ways to establishing viewing figures, i.e; if the 6 o'clock news run a story about the Grand Prix that day, then the audience figures of the news would be added to those for the actual race. Other sports used to do similar but IIRC correctly, there was an EU ruling that called them on the practice.

Either way, it doesn't reflect well on the veracity of F1 announcements.

Lies, dammed lies and some made up numbers.

An increase at Baku, could be expected as it is not the sulphur saturated atmosphere that many anticipated. But do we really believe that in 2016, exactly 30,000 people attended, yet in 2017 exactly 71,451 turned up?

I would be surprised if either of those figures are accurate given that the race exists to promote a regime ranked the 123rd most corrupt in the world, alongside Mexico. Russia is 131st.

This is the level that F1 has sunk to in recent years.

If you think they are inaccurate then file a complaint to the EU.

Gate receipts are normally auditable.

A more interesting and constructive question would be how many of those tickets were paid for, and how many were massively discounted vs full face value.

I believe Italy for example, it was packed this year according to friends who go each year.

Italian attendances fluctuate depending on how well Ferrari is doing.

I must admit to loving it when Merc totally crushed them at Monza on their anniversary. And Lewis twisting the knife with his comments on Ferrari power. laugh

We are being advised to be suspicious about fake news daily. Comparing one figure rounded to the nearest 10,000, and then suddenly observing a 138% growth the following year, seems to be just too good to be true. But it is a very convenient number for Liberty to band about to any other despots wanting a GP.

Provided that Azerbaijan pays Liberty it’s dues, I doubt they will think to audit the attendance figures. Spinning a story at the end of the season about increased attendance figures is wholly within their remit, they have hungry shareholders.

But the reality is that the prize fund has diminished by about $40million and the teams are not happy.

My response was to this

Yet F1 is losing a large percentage of fans each year.
And I quoted track side viewing.

My point is simple. The sky is not falling, sponsorship is pretty healthy at the moment and we have had a reasonable year of racing. Everyone is in jostle and position mode for 2021. No teams are talking about folding. Halo is not the "final straw". etc.

Sometimes I find PH to be too "British", constantly looking to shoot down their heroes and look for the conservative/negative in any possible scenario...

F1 is becoming to "weedy" and "poncey" for me - to be honest. All the glitz and glamour and none of the danger.

(Yep - I like the fact that the se guys used to put their necks on the line).

Nothing new under the sun.

F1 raced in South Africa during it's very worse years of apartheid stopping only when the TV companies refused to broadcast the race.

You can peel away the layers of acceptability of any nation and find reasons F1 or any sport should not be there. For the India GP you had a bunch of the world's wealthiest people enjoying themselves less than a mile from some of the world's poorest. Similar in Brazil (also a highly corrupt nation).

Choosing a country in which to race based upon the nation's probity of governance would yield a remarkably short list.

Quite. And lets not forget that Monaco is a dictatorship in all but name and (allegedly) a safe haven for some of the world's more shadier characters....as has F1 from time to time.

That one is easily explained - there was no German GP this year.

We went to both Baku races, no way the attendance more than doubled for 2017. The stands had an impressively high occupancy for a new event in 2016, more than 50% for sure. The stands didn't increase in size or number in 2017. There is a large general access area along the huge main straight but numbers there seemed similar both years.

A big change between the events was a much wider engagement in 2017 - people attending the open pit lane (empty 2016 and mobbed 2017), driver signing sessions, practice and GP2/F2 sessions.

The Mercedes signing session in 2016 was hilarious. Few people there and all were focused on Lewis and Rosco the dog. Rosberg (leading the championship at the time) was totally ignored. He just sat with a wry smile watching Lewis sign things. biglaugh
