Makes sense from a Porsche stand point to buy an existing team, keep all the staff on including Newey, how it fits in with Red bulls plans for a works Honda engine deal for 2019 onwards, maybe just a 2 year deal with Honda then?

Aren’t they starting a Formula E works team in 2019? Is that a rather massive undertaking to be then going into F1 as a works team also?

VAG are a huge company. I'm sure they could afford to do both if they felt it worthwhile.

The article mentions Webber & Marko in the same paragraph - I can't see those 2 in the same room.

Webber was still a Red Bull sponsored driver when he left F1 to drive the Porsche so he's still got a commercial relationship with him.

He's a mate of Mateschitz, not Marko.

I think this story is pure clickbait; they've dusted off an article written 3 years ago and selected 'Audi' 'replace all' with 'Porsche'. It could equally be 'Lamborghini'.

There's no doubt that most manufacturers with a global presence will be eying up F1 post 2021. But who knows what the global economic climate will be then and how much momentum the anti-petroleum lobby will have gained.

It's certainly 'possible', but wether it will happen or not is a different matter. I was listening to a Joe Saward's podcast on Missed Apex and he discussed Red Bull withdrawing, a rumour which seems to be gathering pace. They would sell the team, but continue as a sponsor with a presence on the car for a few years and 'fade out'. Whether it's Porsche or someone else remains to be seen, things change over time. I genuinely think VW were committed to partner with Red Bull as an engine supplier until the emissions scandal hit and their plans had to change.

Off topic - the Missed Apex F1 Podcast is great. Well worth a listen, good lively race reviews and other F1 related topics, and doesn't take itself too seriously. Makes for a good partner to the Autosport podcasts, which are consistently excellent. I could listen to Ed Straw and Stuart Codling all day long.

Ahh that would make more sense.

It does seem to b more clickbait then anything else. If by some miracle that Honda donkey starts pulling better numbers than the Renault unit next year I don't think Red Bull will go anywhere for a while.

Red Bull have invested a lot of money into the facility at MK so there must be a bigger future plan. They own a good chunk of the Tilbrook site now.

It's that time of year again though with the F1 World now back in full flow after the summer break and in need of publicity.

About this time of year there is always speculation over which of the big manufactures who are not in F1 may come in. Likewise there have been mutterings for at least the last 4 years that Red Bull's time in F1 is coming to an end as a team owner. Don't forget not only is their product now mature but also one which is facing mounting and growing attacks.

Add to this the mass defections of Manufactures from outher high profile areas of motorsport to FE and you will see that F1 needs a big 'feel good' story about new people coming in this year more than ever.

Click bait? Perhaps not, more like wish bait.

At least they've picked a different part of the VAG group this year. For the last few year's it's been "Audi to enter F1".

Given the financial situation VAG are in I can't see it happening. They have now pulled both winning Audi and Porsche entries out of the WEC due to cost and entered Formula E because it gives the same road relevance for a fraction the cost. Why would the want to start spending 3x as much as their WEC programs to be a runner-up in an increasingly irrelevant F1?

It would make sense if anyone was actually watching F1 but since it's going behind paywalls via the likes of Sky no one is going to see it .

Hence a very bad choice of sponsor advertising dollars unless they make it free view again. When ch4 lose their live shows no one will be watching.

Number of uk sky F1 subscribers is around 220-300k people, more people watch bowling!

I used to watch F1 religiously on the BBC pre sky days loved it and from memory it had millions of viewers.

It's on sky now and has been for a fair time I watch the odd clip of a race or have it on in the background. Coverage is good but I'm only having the sports as it's been thrown into a cracking sky price so I justified it due to Rugby championship the F1 Golf Masters Ryder cup plus Eurosport skiing.

VAG will not join F1 for the foreseeable future F1 wants them to come in but they have no interest especially in this Mercedes dominated era, even when the new engine regs come in at best they'll supply engines but that will be it.

Porsche are committed to Formula E now as I think they see that as more benefit to their road cars of the future. I would love them in Formula 1 and I feel they desperately need another engine supplier but the costs are astronomical and the negative marketing if they get it wrong (BMW, Toyota, Honda) could destroy years of marketing as one of the best outright sports car brands on the planet

I'm unsure how aston Ferrari Lamborghini Porsche doing Formulae E can make average joe punters compare the electric motors they are using.

Secretly in convinced they know that will never happen, manufacturers doing FE is like celebrities buying a Prius, it looks good but next to the electric scooter is a big V8 or V12 in the garage

As much as I hate thought of it, we can't deny that electric vehicles are currently the vision of the future. I personally hate Formula e as the lack of sound, all the cars looking the same etc just does nothing for me in terms of racing excitement. Porsche feel they can definately gain something from it, whether it's the technology from their Le Man's car will give them an upper hand or market them as the racing car of the future (don't forget, Porsche have just shown their electric concept car as their vision of the future). I would still love them in Formula1 though but just can't see it. Hope I'm wrong
