Oval racing is mostly dull. I was enticed to watch Indy last year for the first time in 15 years but then remembered that it was only because of Alonso that I was watching it. Ok as background tv but not compelling.

You sound like an authority in racing excitement but then you undermine it by saying that Alonso raced in Indy last year. Let's just say that if you actually bothered to watch more than one oval race you would have realised that some ovals are more exciting than others, with more ovals being exciting than boring. And this year's Indy wasn't boring at all.

They may have been. I didn’t watch them.

I personally find oval racing boring. As I noted I used to watch it. The fundamentals haven’t changed. If you enjoy them then great, I don’t say that nobody should enjoy them, just that I don’t.
