Mugen-Honda engines won three races in 98-99 in the back of a Jordan. Frentzen was a genuine title contender in 99 until the final three races of the season when he retired from the lead of the European GP with an electrical issue.
He was a contender, but there was really no real hope of him winning it. Regardless of the one electrical issue.

I agree the odds were hugely against them, but it was still a mathematical possibility with a couple of races left to go. Without that electrical issue he would have gone into the penultimate race joint second with Irvine, a single point behind Hakkinen. As it turned out they didn't quite have the pace in those last two races anyway.

It wasn't an electrical issue, it was a driver issue - Jordan had managed to sneak traction control onto their car by cleverly wheedling their way through a series of loopholes:

Jordan: "Dear FIA is legal to do this?"
FIA: "Yes"
Jordan: "Dear FIA is iegal to do that?"
FIA: "Yes"
Jordan: "Is it also legal to do this other thing?"
FIA: "Yes"
.....etc..... - the sum of each question effectively equalled traction control.

However, IIRC this maze of loopholes meant that the driver had to press a button just after the pitstop otherwise the car would stop. Unfortunately HHF forgot despite the team yelling at him over the radio and the car stopped.

(I reckon Eddie Jordan recounted this story on the telly but can't find any confirmation of it)

Also, where in mattered, HHF wasn't nasty or mean enough to have an edge over a competitor.

HHF seemed a bit slow to be honest (not only as a driver I mean). Yet he managed to score nicely (ditto).
