Still way more than I'd pay to watch F1 coverage tbh. Better than £40/month for SKY I guess.

If they allowed rewatching or longer pauses than 30 mins (?) then I'd get it. Having 2 small kids means F1 has to be watched in blocks or delayed...

The races are getting closer together, there's a triple header in June / July so you do it even cheaper by buying a month pass and getting three weekend's coverage. This is the sort of thing I'll be doing.

I like the coverage of both, but pretty much do the above ^. But, this year will be the last you can do that, as from 2019 it's Sky *only* (or via NowTV, which is still Sky, but still no free-to-air F1 after this year).

They've not announced one yet. It might end up on Sky Sports mix for all we know. Sky have an exclusive deal for ALL TV in the UK. It will be up to them if they want to show or allow highlights on council TV.

I forsee a gown up conversation behind closed doors between Liberty and Sky about their depth of strangle hold in the UK....no I don't expect sky to relinquish anything on the live front front, but would anticipate Liberty saying to Sky something along the lines of that "they would look far more favourably on their bid for post 2025 if they could help Liberty out with a highlights package on FTA as soon as a deal could be arranged."

Can F1 boss Chase Carey help renegotiate Sky TV deal?

This would be an immense gesture by Sky and, it must be said, requires Sky to be agreeable in Liberty's efforts. Sky could easily turn round and say 'no, we paid x for exclusive coverage and we're going to stick to that, sorry'. Or they could renegotiate a much cheaper but highlights only deal, on a Monday so not even on the same day. Or on a Sunday evening. Or something in between.

Sky have recently agreed a deal with USA TV to supply the coverage of the races, using the UK team as the commentators. The payment from that might just be the deal they needed to enable them to be more flexible for FTA options in the UK.

But for Macboy it’s still a SKY product.

Five years is a long time not to have F1 free to air or streamed by FOM. The concern is that people will drift to other sports or pastimes and when it returns many will find it too much of a bother to try and fit in.

I'll still watch it I think but part of the enjoyment is the post race discussion with friends and even on here. If that's hit, and I can see a number of my F1 friends taking no further interest after this season - some don't even bother with catch up on Ch4 for the Sky only live broadcast ones - and so it will affect my enjoyment.

I've got a feeling I might follow WEC.

Derek interesting point about "post race discussion on here" is that Face to Face post race discussion is getting harder to do as less and less people
Watch F1.
Hence if we do want to discuss then places like this become more important, and if coverage is all behind the paywall no one at work will be chatting about F1 on a Monday as no one will be watching!

Kind of my view too. If it's not easy to see - I won't be bothering to make the effort.

I have enough interest in the history of motor sport to keep an "F1" interest going - but chiefly in the cars and characters of the past - which is a rich and interesting history.

It seems that there will be historic racing series included at some of the F1 GPs this year. This is an interesting development and shows that the current race organisers can see the growing interest in older technology and older driving styles.

I used to watch F1 with a group of enthusiasts. We'd go to different houses for each race. We supported different drivers and teams so it was fun. I'd see the race from different viewpoints as well.

Over the years numbers have fallen and now it is 50:50 whether I watch the race on my own (my wife's a fan so never quite alone) and with a mate or two/three. Never more though. It's taken a lot of the fun out of F1. It's an irritation. If it goes completely non fta then it's only highlights at most for most, and that's not F1. So much is missed.

I'll follow it online, with lap times and such, which is more than I got in the old days, but who do I talk about it to face to face?

Historics have been supporting modern F1 for a few years, the last 3 years have been in the USA, Canada and Mexico. This year we are also supporting the British GP. The first Baku GP race was for historics, used as a test for the modern cars the year after.

There was a historic race at the 1965 French GP - so it's not altogether new. But it does seem that more venues are recognising the attractiveness of having a couple of historic races on the schedule.

You think WEC will be on terrestrial TV with loads of people watching and discussing it with friends or on here? I think you're in for a shock.
WEC is at a crossroads moment, only 1 works team in LMP1 this year. Its pretty dull to watch even with more than 1 works team.
