Sky are charging me £46.50/month now for tv/f1 HD legacy (no movie or sport) and since getting netflix the only non FTA stuff we really watch is F1 and eurosport and I'm feeling they're taking the p.
Many of the legacy contracts simply aren't worth it now. We stuck with a legacy F1 deal for a year at something like £47 or so but then cancelled, a few weeks later they were offering us everything (as in HD, Sports, Movies) for £25 a month. We cancelled at the end of that year and waited a few weeks, rejoined at £30 (again HD, Sports, Movies, Sky Go+ etc) which is what we have now.

I wouldn't pay for it - Brundle is OK, but the rest of the coverage is crap!

Even compared to ITV4 - which is saying something given that they have that Welsh knob! banghead

It's been reported that there will be an unspecified highlights package showing on an unspecified FTA channel at an unspecified time after every race. At worst it will be a one hour midweek show like we get for WRC and MotoGP; at best it will be something like we get on C4 now, with extended highlights on the same evening as the race.
I don't think there's any chance Sky will allow the latter option as they need to squeeze as many new viewers as possible on to their subscription platform. We'll be lucky if it's a one hour show like WRC & MotoGP.
There's every chance Sky will allow the latter option as that is exactly what they have done in Italy - a 'highlights' show is being broadcast on an FTA channel on the afternoon or evening of the same day the race was run amounting to pretty much the whole race (as per the current highlights shows the UK gets from Channel 4).

It would seem the FTA clause in the TV rights is being loosened but not let go of entirely.

Some great news being reported clap

https://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/45494135

"The British Grand Prix will be shown live on both Channel 4 and Sky in 2019, as part of a new partnership between the broadcasters.

Channel 4, which is free to air, has also secured highlights of all races, while Sky will carry every race live on its subscription-only F1 channel."

It is good, but no mention of when they will be shown. Hopefully the same day, but I fear for a Monday night package making it even harder to avoid the news for a day...

I think it will be Monday at best. That will allow Sky to extract maximum value from the subcribers who couldn't watch it live & will watch the re-run on Sunday evening.

This sounds about right sadly

A Monday night highlight show would be pretty damn rubbish quite frankly.

I was at a friends recently and really enjoyed watching the Sky coverage for the Italian GP. A real highlight was watching the support races, some great action and interesting watching Norris race given the recent news.

I would love Sky Sports, but just can't justify the cost! I really don't want all the other crap you have to get with it. I have Amazon & Netflix, so Sky has nothing other than sports that I desire. Have less and less time to watch now anyway.

Although I've just done my yearly switch of broadband from BT back to Sky (the new customer deals are always much much better). Last time I was with Sky they called me up and offered a pretty good TV deal but I turned it down. Might be more tempted this time!

Sky are currently offering Entertainment + Sports (both in HD) for £40 a month, saving £19 off the normal price.

If you want UHD and a Mini (to watch in another room), that £12 a month extra.

Why would it necessarily be any different to what we have now for the races where Sky have exclusive live coverage? They allow C4 to show extended highlights on the same day, both for qualifying and the race. It will just be for every race instead of only half of them.

Never considered it like that but I guess its down to how much c4 pay verses how many subscribers they think they will get at sky high f1 sports. They need it on free to air somewhere as it will be forgotten very fast otherwise.
Im not sure what percentage of a sky package is for the F1 . Maybe £3 for each one a mth? so lets say c4 give them 15 milllion a year thats over 400000 pairs of eyes sub revenue.
Figures seem a bit low for this greedy world so I doubt its that simple.

Because this time around it isn't some bodged up compromise that came about because the BBC dropped out. It's a deal Bernie negotiated & I suspect to ward off too much negative publicity the FTA highlights package was put in. That doesn't mean it has to be at a time that will damage Sky's viewing figures though. I'd be surprised if many people watch the rerun on Sky in the week following the GP whereas they may get quite a few watching it on Sunday evening. Hence I predict the C4 programme will be on Monday evening at best. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Why don't we wait and see instead of being a mood hoover and being negative? I'd imagine it'll be a similar deal to the races Ch 4 don't show live at the moment, highlights on the same day.

Indeed. It's in Sky's interests to keep people interested in F1 - then if the season gets exciting, they'll attract more subscribers..

What's the current price for Sky F1? Someone said it's no longer necessary to pay for all the other gumpf you don't want, but trying to navigate their site the best I can find is £20 for TV (100s of channels I don't want) and then £18 for "TV Extras", i.e. Sky F1

£18 a month seems a tad steep on top of the £20, i.e. £38 a month, £456 a year to watch 21 races = £22 a race. Is that the best you can do?

Seems like it would be cheaper to buy a server in a rack in the US and remote in to watch F1TV that way.

I'm pretty sure you are wrong. We're a year behind Italy with this set-up and what they have is pretty much a race re-run (lacking a few minutes, or more if there is a prolonged safety-car period, just like C4 now) on the same evening as the race. For the Canadian GP the coverage was starting on FTA before the Sky post-race stuff had finished broadcasting.

I expect we will get the same as the contract is on the same terms.

There does seem to be a quid pro quo with Channel 4 showing a Sky series.. so maybe we will be lucky with same day...

"As part of the deal, Channel 4 will screen series one of Sky drama Tin Star, while Channel 4 box sets will be available to Sky customers."

Now TV. £12.99 per race week
