So Alonso was out for 5 laps and the wheel came loose on the 6th? Odd one.

Sky feed:

"08:52
The way Alonso is assessing the right-rear of the car, it looks like the wheel simply worked its way loose and pitched him into a spin.

That'll be a concern for McLaren.

It was on his sixth lap."

BBC reckons he picked up the wheel bearing to take back to the pits.

Mercedes already running just 2 secs off lap record in 4 degC

The track is expected to be much much quicker than last year as its been resurfaced. So its not all car.

What is it? Best guess I can come up with from the size and shape is that it sits at the centre of the hub face (or on the back of the wheel) to guide the wheel into the correct position as it's fitted?

ETA: Ah here we go, is it one of these:

Would say about 2-2.5s covers that range of compounds.

It's day 1 of testing.

I know we are all excited to have moving cars to talk about - but it really is all hot air at the moment

C'mon! There's really nothing new under the sun when it comes to these tyres. Standard caveats re: cold track & cool ambient at this time of the year for this track apply of course. smile

Yes people know the difference - but then will use that information to indulge in the mugs game of trying to divine out and out pace....

No idea of relative pace but according to trackside the Ferrari, Red Bull and McLaren look the most planted on track
