An interesting development before this weekend's racing.

  • The FIA have been monitoring oil use by the cars last year and have found that while Renault and Honda engines consumed ~0.1L/100km, the Merc and Ferrari engines appeared to consume exactly the number specified by the rules, i.e. 1.2L/100km when that was in force and in the latter part of the season, 0.9L/100km, raising suspicions.
  • The oil consumption limit this year is 0.6L/100km, however this cannot be policed during a qualifying session due to the error rate of the sensor used.
  • The FIA are to weigh the oil tanks of all cars before and after qualifying this weekend to more accurately measure oil use for qualifying.
  • The spec of oil that can be used has been specified more clearly for this year, with only one (approved) spec that can be used for a particular GP weekend.
Source: AMuS/F1 Technical Regulations

Could mix things up! Renault/Honda engined teams will be licking their lips.
I cant see them weighing the oil tanks, they are integrated into the car far too much for that. You also get different quantities of oil in the tank depending on the engine rpm when shutoff and any leak through the pumps whilst static.

Weird when teams are only allowed to use one approved spec of oil at a given GP weekend, which must be declared prior to the event. But this oil could be contaminated with another oil spec up to 10%. hehe
This is probably a hang over from the fuel regs which allow the same contamination of another approved fuel by 10%. It just allows more reasonable flushing when moving from one blend to the next

I'm surprised they can't accurately check the level of oil in the tank at a fixed condition (oil / water temperature and rpm following a defined preconditioning procedure)

Predictions for the year?

Hamilton for the WDC
Merc for the constructors
Biggest whine of the year will come from Christian Horner
Biggest temper tantrum will come from Vettel

I also predict I won't be watching much of it !
(Context: I went about 20 years barely missing a race but have watched less & less over the last 3 years. Don't really miss it, it has to be said)

"LH yawn fest "?

You must be watching a different series to me.

2014 went down to the last race.
2015 was close until the USGP, that seemed to knock the stuffing out of Rosberg.
2016 went down to the last race.
2017 Hamilton was behind for most of the season, hardly his or Mercs fault Ferrari buggered up the end of the season.

If you want yawn fests I suggest you go back and watch reruns of the golden Schumacher years.

Schumacher went to Ferrari and dragged a dog of a car up the front whilst the dream team set about building a good car and team. Vettel hasn't got that in him and wont achieve anything compared to what Michael did. He isn't good enough in a car that isn't dominant.
The schmacher Ferrari trick was replicated somewhat when brawn put together the current Merc team. Contrary to popular myth drivers dont build teams.

The quantities burnt are interesting. 1.2l/100km is equivalent to 3.6l per 300km race, or about 3kg. If all of this is combustible then it is 3% increase in fuel.

The problem the FiA has is they are measuring quantity in a tank and not flow in a line, Measuring the oil tank level periodically will give a rate of burn and the longer the time period the more accurate the measurement.

Over one lap, one could expect the engine to burn slightly more than (due to no fuel saving) 100kg/race laps amount of fuel, so 100/58=1.82kg or probably closer to 2kg. The amount of oil consumed would be 0.6/100*lap length, in the case of Aus, (5.303km), 0.031lt, or just over a shot glass full, or about 25grams. Good luck with that.

I guess in times gone by the FiA could have taken the total mileage in qualifying and done the math on oil consumption averaged through qualifying. Thing is a team could use zero oil on in/out laps and banked that allowance against the flyers, allowing the teams to use 3x the oil based on in/flyer/out.
I thought oil burn was as much getting around peak fuel flow? Merc could still do 20-25 laps in a full qually sesh and only use oil on the one or two of them that matter.

FWIW my 2018 predictions, in no particular order.

Hamilton will walk it. Tidying up both championships almost as soon as mathematically possible.
Vettel will by around mid-season have had a very public breakdown, a falling out with Ferrari and will want to leave the team.
Bottas will continue to be mildly unimpressive.
Kimi will speak to everyone's surprise.
Alonso will do better than expected in a resurgent McLaren, especially after the first engine upgrade.
Stoffel will be right on Alonso's coat-tails.
Red Bull and especially Horner will take whinging and blaming Renault to new heights as McLaren regularly beat them.
Riccardo will continue to amuse everyone, but will fail to score points on far too many occasions.
Williams will continue to be many peoples second favourite team despite jogging around the back with a poor car and woeful drivers.
Honda will once again have power/reliability/fuel issues and will be changing engines every race by the end of the season.

Away from the drivers I cannot see why shy have hired Rosberg. I thought his guest appearance last year was terrible. For sure.

Don't know how credible the source but something to think about.

https://thejudge13.com/2018/03/19/kubica-could-be-...

Completely unreliable - probably best filed under “fake news”

As unlikely as it is, IF, it did happen and Williams were to drop Sirotkin due to lack of funds and put Kubica in the car, would it be fair to say it’d be s complete PR disaster after the big Claire Williams speech/rant about putting in the fastest driver and that they haven’t got pay drivers...

It may well be unlikely to happen but I kind of want it to just to see how it would play out.

^^ Having Kubica in the Williams will certainly make them a more interesting team to follow.

I agree with you about what Clair said when signing Sirotkin, I think we all saw that as PR and a stretch of the truth. I don't know what the likelyhood of such sanctions are - but if Sirotkin's cheques disappear, so will his race seat.

Seb clearly been working on his fitness. Looks like he has lost a good bit of weight and gone hard on the neck training. I wonder if he was struggling with the higher G loads last year?

We had quite a bit of discussion on here about the 'distress' in drivers voices over the radio last year, particularly for Lewis so you may well be right.
I've really high expectations this year for Seb and the Ferrari. I think in his career, to go from a really strong car, to a bit of an also ran, to suddenly being in with a good shout again put him under a load of pressure which I'm hoping he really rises to this year.... Really looking forward to it.

Has anyone found a weather forecast for the weekend from a fairly reliable source?

Had a quick look and it seemed there might be some rain around Melbourne this weekend - slim chance that might make it even more exciting...can't wait!

Yesss! Just looked him up, so true.

Nowt against Seb, I like him. He likes brit comedy and has a great sense of humour. I hope he is part of making the racing close and a great season but being patriotic.. I hope Lewis makes it 5.
