I think Merc were trying to be a bit too clever in the 1st stint, and I'd say that rather than the VSC cockup cost them the win. Lewis was setting a slow pace early on, to keep the midfield pack close by to prevent an early undercut attempt by Ferrari.
He spent like 10 laps in the 1m29s, leading by 3 seconds after 15 laps.
Pretty sure that Merc could have gone a lot faster, judging by how much speed they were able to find when they suddenly found themselves behind the red car.
Again in the second stint, the same games.
Maybe Merc were too concerned about absolutely dominating the first race after absolutely dominating the first qualifying.
We don't want people to start panicking, do we?
