Indeed, I took my sons, then age 8 & 10 to the Friday practice for the British GP in 1992. We arrived early and parked up to cook some egg & bacon sandwiches on a camping cooker, all part of the fun for young boys. The noise even then at pre-qualification was amazing. My boys couldn't wait to get to see that cars. Afterwards we managed to get photos of them sitting on the front wheels of Senna's McLaren, unfortunately I've lost the photo. Thinking back quali' was a different experience back then, very relaxed because cars had open pit lane and it started early with the Minardis, March, Brabhams, Andrea Modas etc.
I was there in 1994. It was so much more relaxed which was a huge surprise.

Imagine trying to sit on the front wheels of any F1 car now. You would be arrested biggrin

Hope you find the picture in the future. Sounds like a brilliant weekend you had with your boys.

You gave your boys fantastic memories.

Losing that sound is really what’s killed it for me. Just attending a Grand Prix was special for that alone. The awful aesthetics just compound it.

I clearly remember going to the test session in June ‘89 - the first year of the ‘new’ normally aspirated engines. My Dad stopped at Silverstone village to get a spare roll of film. We could hear that incredible 3.5 litre unrestricted V10 and V12 scream in the distance, and just wanted to be there.

Fast forward 24 years and I took my own son to the Silverstone test for a last listen to a proper sounding F1 engine. Not been since. These days I’d rather cut the grass.

Not surprised. My lawnmower sounds far sexier than a modern F1 engine - and it's a Flymo.

I am just not into these modern engines. Yes they are no doubt faster than anything we have seen in the past but they are just soulless.

Would much rather have slower cars that sounded better than what we have now.

Listen to a 1986 Turbo F1 car and that gets the hairs on the back of your neck to rise.

Surely it would not take much to have a much better sound.

Just listen to thing beast

Not F1 but F3. However, the race does have a few future F1 drivers on the grid - and what a lovely little circuit Crystal Palace was.

I have to say that for me, old cars being demo’d like that isn’t really where it’s at.
The drivers never really extend them to anywhere near the cars limits.

How about this lap of the ‘old’ Silverstone in 1990, in the Lola Lambo V12 (one of my favourite cars of that era):

Looks a great track.

I see they do sprints there still but it doesn't look like the full track.

Such a shame.

It's never the same as they are too scared to brake them.

Could imagine most if not all would be Millions to insure.

Great to see them out but as you say it's not the same.

That Lambo V12 sounds amazing.

As for Silverstone. Another track ruined IMO.

The full track no longer exists as they built the athletics stadium over part of it.

They built a baseball stadium over part of the track in Mexico, and made a unique feature out of it.

Love the original Mexico track.

It's not a bad track now but the last part "fan zone" is a bit yuck.

Great racing.

After all that Prost won, Schumacher was second, Damon retire, and Senna ran out of fuel
