Reading an interview, and apparently he lapped in the 1 minute 39s today, equivalent to Lewis Hamilton's fastest lap during the race last year.

That's progress then - a 15 year old car with just a few laps of running, on presumably less than optimal settings - is as quick as the fastest car
in race trim last year smile I'm not an expert in these things - but I imagine a testing programme to optimise the car to today's tyres, and to tune the settings for the circuit, and it would be quicker still.

People have said that the racing was no more exciting back then - and perhaps they're right. But as an overall package of entertainment?

The cars are built to a Formula, hence the name of the series, Formula 1. If the engineers were left to it the cars would be much faster.
This is why comparing cars from different era's needs to understand the rules applied at the time are what sets the pace potential.
The point is that even if it’s a bit slower in reality, it looks so much faster, sounds fantastic and is relatively simple and way, way cheaper than the sanitised drivel we’ve currently got. What’s not to like? Last week, Russel proved to the hard of thinking that F1 isn’t a true sport in terms of driver skill (never was), so why not at least make the cars look and sound like they’re worth watching? I’d be back to Silverstone like a shot. As things stand I don’t even bother with the radio now.

I remember watching Alonso going through Bridge in that car and he was just bloody mighty , taking a visibly different line to everybody else and insanely quick . And what a soundtrack - despite being ancient enough to have heard Ferrari Flat 12s and Matra V12 in period , I am not sure anything sounded any better than the last iteration of V10 . And yup , I've heard a BRM V16...

I saw the next years Renault at a Silverstone test back in the day - I've got a poor quality video (but good sound) of it going through Maggots - the speed was terrifying.

The BRM V16 just sounded annoying to me - like a kid screaming but with the volume turned up so much that it hurt. The sound didn't seem to match the acceleration of the car either. Same with the H16 really, but a less painful noise.

Best sound to me was the original Renault 3.5 litre V10 or the Honda V-12; best experienced from the Copse end of the pit wall where the sound shook your insides.

There's a bit more to Hamilton's reaction here:

It really is amazing how the FIA can screw the sport into something relatively dull, given what they started with. Even the drivers look back with affection.

I came across this beautifully restored TV footage of the 1975 Monaco GP on You Tube last night. It looks so fresh and immediate. It certainly looks better than it would have on our family TV back in 1975. Lovely cars, great drivers and a relatively uncluttered looking Monaco (barriers further back from the side of the track, no tall chain link or perspex barriers etc).

It was obviously recorded straight off the original Eurovision feed as it has no commentary. Just sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of a GP from 46 years ago.

Lovely.

As an old fart I don't mind admitting that I can still recognise every car and driver , even a near subliminally brief view on screen . Soundtrack is the period default DFV chainsaw buzz , but enlivened by the classy howl of the 312T's flat twelve . Lovely stuff- I'd seen broadly the same field a few weeks earlier at Brands Hatch Race of Champions , then the Silverstone Daily Express International Trophy , and was to see them yet again at a soaking British GP.

Happy days ...

I love the way so many of the drivers slip, slide and get their tails out as they boot it out of the hairpins.

Thanks Eric!

That was wonderfully hypnotic and balletic at the same time, especially as they drift out of Anthony Noghes - probably the best corner to watch an F1 car because even today the change in camber can cause a car to kick its tail out.

My YT recommendations came up with the 1973 French GP with Jody Scheckter giving his McLaren a damn good thrashing!

I already started a thread here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPDMpycBjok

I didn't put it in the F1 forum because a lot of the cars running are not F1 cars. Sports cars running at the moment.

Fabulous - I saw that car race in period and it still tingles the spine . Despite his years of flappy paddle driving , it's good to see that Jean's heel and toe-ing is still au point .

Such a shame it ended that way, was a fantastic race up to that point. Anyone know what actually happened, did they touch or did something on the Ferrari break?

Monaco was excellent today! Albeit a couple of cars crunched to the point I'd say they're dead.. (but in reality they'll be rebuilt yet somehow remain original..) it was a very lovely sunny day of motorsport and the locals were really enjoying it smile

Hit up the bum whilst accelerating hard, which usually means he missed a gear or something in the drivetrain broke, both giving no drive forward with the car behind flat out closing the gap unexpectedly. He then hit the wall following the impact. Based on the fact when he was hit up the bum and then spun up the rear tyres as they went light, leaving some darkies, i'd say he missed a gear shift, then got it, then got hit whilst hard on the throttle.

Without all the facts and drivers talking to the stewards the penalty seemed very harsh.
