I understand your point.
I don't know, on a percentage of races basis, the chances of dying on a racehorse compared to in an F1 car.
Also, for the accidents/deaths that do surely occur, I'm not sure they could be easily avoidable by a relatively small and simple, albeit ugly, protective structure on the horses.
So people are more resigned to the accidents that do happen in horse racing and nothing to do with the people involved?
Money - plain and simple combined with spineless leadership.I don't know, on a percentage of races basis, the chances of dying on a racehorse compared to in an F1 car.

That's why we've got what we've got today in F1.

No really.
Why does F1 feel it has to enforce a level of caution way in excess of what is deemed acceptable in many other sports such as motor cycle racing, horse racing, three day eventing etc?
Is it "special" in some way?
Are the protagonists more worthy than say, a jockey?
At least one of those sports regularly make changes to improve competitor safety. Eventing has introduced the air jacket to reduce spinal injuries, frangible pins for fences, etc. Why does F1 feel it has to enforce a level of caution way in excess of what is deemed acceptable in many other sports such as motor cycle racing, horse racing, three day eventing etc?

The latter is constantly being reviewed and improved to reduce the risk of falls and the resulting injuries.
There are also now plans for the governing body to deploy cameras at all events above a certain level to record every horse jumping every fence so all falls can be reviewed and changes made where necessary to reduce resulting injury.
Their intention isn't to stop falls altogether, but to ensure that when they happen, the chance of injury to horse and rider is minimised. Remarkably similar to FIA's aims.
I watched Ted's notebook on Sky F1 today, he said that there is a camera hole at the front of every halo but they're not utilising it yet and are still looking at ways of making the onboard a bit more palatable for viewers.
In my view it should be digitally removed as much as possible, the camera is fixed, the halo is fixed. It shouldn't be too hard to do for the onboard shots.

On the fly, during a live broadcast, with presumably a digitally replaced area showing us what you would see behind it? No chance.maybe you could have erased something digitally with sd broadcasts of 320x240 lines but not in hi def live.
Its shocking that they didnt mount a tiny front and rear facing camera underneath the halo but you get the impression the
teams dont care. They would have had to revise some part of their design work and couldn't be arsed.
In fact you get the impressiion they dont care about much beyond getting the money in to pay the wages and enable them
to do their hobby.
They didnt care how stupid the cars looked with the big advertising board fin either. Just something to get more money.
Drivers name on the hoop would have been nice so you dont have to depend of the captions which have been known to stop
working. Cant be arsed till they are instructed.

It was 14th of March 1993, and I was in front of my TV, watching my first F1 race - The South African GP at Kyalami. The cars looked and sounded good. The camera views were reasonably good, and I could SEE my heroes driving their vehicles. Over the coming years, I watched 95% of the races, and became a very big fan of Formula One. The HALO has completely destroyed my interest in the sport. I cannot believe they implemented this THING ... it looks like CRAP. I don't care who wins tomorrow ..... "The fastest thong in Albert Park"?!

How do you know what's behind the bits of the picture where the halo is?
Most of it is car and what isn't is generic grey racetrack, can't be that difficult.Or, get rid of the halo completely and be done with it.
Final option - choose a better camera mounting spot where half of the screen isn't taken up by this monstrosity.

this is the first year in about 100 that I'm genuinely not excited to watch the first race.
I was thinking a similar thing. I've never felt less excited about the start of a new season. The cars sound st, the cars look st and the whole sorry mess is vanishing behind the paywall at the end of the year. I feel as though I've already checked out.Blaster72 said:
This is the Halo with camera hole shown at the top, apparently the teams have covered this hole with carbon fiber for now but it could be used later on in the season.
Off topic, but why isn’t the halo hinged right there. Would make egress/access sooo much easier if they could just flip it forward and slam lock it in place at the rear when neededMitchT said:

It would be very difficult to make it strong enough. It's integrated right into the chassis and the test weights it has to undergo are massive.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
