I think the camera shake makes it appear more spectacular than it really was

This is what’s wrong with modern F1. The camera angles and professional video quality make onboard shots look so sedate, I look at footage of Hamilton and Vettel and think “yeah, I could do that, it’s easy”

You see the old shakey footage like above and it looks physically awful, there’s no way I’d have the skill or physical ability to do that lap after lap. Bring back crap quality onboard cameras is what I say!

I think you need to remember that the car had no power steering and a manual gearbox.

No run off area's and safety wasn't anywhere near today's standards.

The way he was driving that car was more spectacular than the clip shows.

I wonder how the driving would look if the camera on board was the latest technology? My guess the driving would still look pretty hectic compared to modern F1. Just watch Senna's inputs and corrections in the steering - and the fact that he has to do a lot of that single handed.

Ah ..how I mourn the lost art of the heel and toe downchange in F1 ....And steering wheels that steered and nothing else , not to mention engines so splendidly vocal.

I love how the ‘camera shake’ makes his head and the steering wheel move independently of the mirrors and other parts............

With those generation McLarens the full engine cover came off including the mounted camera. I believe the loose bodywork was a John Barnard philosophy to allow more freedom in aerodynamic shape separate from the chassis. So the camera was just mounted to some 'floppy' bodywork and not the chassis, causing extra shaking.

Sorry for the model pic, only one I could find of a 'naked' MP4/6 quickly.

Onboard footage from for example the Williams FW14 from the same year where the camera was mounted directly on the chassis (just below the roll hoop) it hardly shakes.
Some comparable footage from the MP4/6 and FW14 (1991) shows the difference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9aeI8_kf9I

I believe the first McLaren where they dropped this loose bodywork concept was the 1993 MP 4/8. Barnard used the concept largely for the 89/90 Ferrari, but dropped it with the 1991 Benetton.

The 1990/1 Ferrari with the same removable bodywork concept onboard, also more shaky: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTYiY8VlVfs

For me one of the most beautiful looking and sounding F1 cars. It has special relevance to me because mansell drive it for the two years it was imho at its best and purest. Tiny little things too.

Yep good stuff. I like this one too. Scumarcher monza Benetton with manual box.
Loses nose a first corner pits and goes after the field.
Funny when chasing Berger Ferrari just before Berger pits.

Great clip!

Just goes to show how much current F1 has lost from the drama in so many ways.
