Bad news for Sirotkin. Quite often a driver gets a seat because you need a Russian or an Indian in the field.

Couldn't agree more. What a sad state for a sport to find itself in.
Disagree, everyone loves a sporting ‘comeback’ / ‘unfinished business’ type narrative.

FP3 today, Helmut Marko taking about Ocon, looks like the drive is his if he can get out of the Merc contract, that would cost Estaban what 15/20 million $, perhaps Merc can do an engine deal LOL.

Toto has categorically stated that he won’t release Ocon.

Its not Toto's money paying him, its Daimler's.

Well yes, when it's a tale of triumph against adversity type scenario. This isn't, it's just 'we need a warm body to plug in for a year'. If by some miracle Ticktum gets a superlicence Kvyat will be out on his arse again as fast as RB can make the call.

I'd much prefer to see STR asking 'who is the best driver we can get?' not bending over being RB's bhes.

Toto seems more determined to be a barrier to Ocon's career at the moment than do anything to help him get a seat.

This ocon hysteria is blow up with no thought.
Wolf wants him around to step into a mercedes seat in the next few years.
The obsession people have with seeing someone going round and round in middling places is very odd.
Do people look back on careers and say 'lots of 6th and 7ths and a 4th now and again, wow what a driver'
Seems like an attempt to goad him into some sort of career ending outburst if he was thick enough.
At worst its probably a year out. Its not like he has to explain himself at the job centre is it.

Wonder how long it will be until Kyvat is dumped again.

No, at worst it's never driving in F1 again. It's a fickle business and you rarely get to come back. Kyvatt notwithstanding.

They say that a week is a long time in politics. Well, a year is a lifetime in F1.

I'd be surprised if he makes it to the of the year. He's a stop-gap journeyman who has lucked himself back into a seat.

Really? It only seems to be 2019 that is the real issue. Then replace Bottas for Ocon, and then Hamilton for Ocon. He thinks he is the real deal for Mercedes.

Given the depth of experience in the Mercedes management team, and the brain power and data they have, personally I differ to them. They are trying to mitigate a hiccup in plans...

Brain power doesn't always equal common sense though. The big thing in any race series is momentum and seat time. A year in a simulator offers neither of those things and makes your Bottas/Hamilton replacement race rusty and not match fit in a year when they need him to step up and perform from day one. If that performance then doesn't happen confidence dips and getting to the level he needs to get to gets harder....

A year in any car on the grid, even the Williams, and racing in F1 is a better option than a year out.

I don't disagree but I am being pragmatic. Worst case, maybe they can pay Bottas to opt out of some races..

If only this were one such story. But it's not, is it? It's the RB/TR operation going with the only option available to them. And Kvyat hardly has the sort of record to excite. It's hardly Alonso coming back in 2020 with Ferrari to go for a 3rd WDC is it?

With the garbage (IMO) he's spouting about Schumacher at the moment plus his past history I personally hope it's many years before he get's a seat in F1 if ever. He has a huge amount of growing up to do from what I can see. Even Horner is saying he's not mature enough and from Red Bull that's saying something.

I think you guys are missing a point here. Mercedes don't have Ocon on the books to replace Bottas. He is there incase Hamilton decides one day to throw it all in. They have learned that lesson from Rosberg.

Makes sense - they paid him to opt out of racing this weekend albeit some way into the race ...

I was amused that Coulthard noted he had been asked to move over a few times - and ensured he got the win bonus.
