Anyone watching Monaco Historic?
Discussion
My second time in a row going there after my first visit in 2016.
Such a great day. I got a seat for the whole of Sunday in the Casino Square grandstand for 50 Euros and saw some fantastic machinery going as fast as possible in varied conditions. It was not at all busy and getting in and out was easy, even by car. When it rained too hard for my liking I ventured into the Hermitage hotel where they had live coverage of the races outside, the Spanish Grand Prix and the N24 on various screens in the bars and reception.
Plenty of interesting people to both observe and chat to around and about. Met an Italian billionaire and winked at Bernie in the Hermitage when he clocked my Hesketh t-shirt. A smashing weekend. I sometimes puzzle why more people are not aware of it as a motorsport destination, then I resolve to keep my mouth shut.

Having watched much of the coverage I have an even further enhanced respect and appreciation for the Monaco circuit marshals- I found the danger they faced recovering the stricken cars unpalatable at times.
The driving standard was generally high and most if not all of the competitors involved are exceptionally talented, but with the best will in the world mistakes are made, flags are missed... these drivers aren't constantly informed of circuit conditions over the radio, they are not subject to the same level of health and general fitness assessment as for example a current F1 driver. Most of these drivers are wealthy privateers. Many of them are, with the greatest respect, getting on a bit.
Probably not a popular view on this forum or in the world of historic motorsport, but there it is.
And much more refreshing than the antiseptic and sterile world of modern F1. More of it, I say.The driving standard was generally high and most if not all of the competitors involved are exceptionally talented, but with the best will in the world mistakes are made, flags are missed... these drivers aren't constantly informed of circuit conditions over the radio, they are not subject to the same level of health and general fitness assessment as for example a current F1 driver. All they need to do now is pull down those unsightly debris fences.

It was my second time there and it really is a fantastic meeting and spectacle. You can make it as cheap or expensive as you want to attend I did it first time for less than £250.
Christ we did £140 on 10 coffees, 10 small bottles of water and 10 baguettes on the first morning at the kiosk on casino square !!sjc said:

We were at Casino on Saturday if you walk out to the road up the hill turn left there's a cafe/bar on the left; they do big filled baguettes for 4 euros and soft drinks for 3.50.In 2016 based on two sharing for 4 nights;
Flights hand baggage only £160
Cheap and cheerful hotel in Nice £200
Weekend tickets £100
Worked out at £230 each
The trains from Nice to Monaco are dirt cheap and we stocked up on drinks/snacks at the supermarket. I guess you can make it as cheap or as expensive as you like.
Casino Square
Leicester Square
St Marks Square
The rule when traveling abroad is never shop anywhere suffixed by 'square'.
I concur that the Monaco event can be pretty cheap. A day ticket doesn't run to much and we stayed in an apartment in nearby Antibes at 190 Euros for 3 nights. I think the train there and back along the coast (an event in itself) was about 11 Euros. I booked flights about 9 months in advance so the whole thing was relatively cheap. I will be back there again in 2020.
