Where’s the next GP thread anyways? Someone’s slacking
(In all seriousness, I remember a template thread for them ages ago when DrZ was busy with work but can’t find it? It really should be a sticky so it’s not all down to one poster to sort out.)
It's coming!(In all seriousness, I remember a template thread for them ages ago when DrZ was busy with work but can’t find it? It really should be a sticky so it’s not all down to one poster to sort out.)
I can probably take it up to the summer break (Hungarian GP), then perhaps other posters can start it off.

I think the point with Vettel's error at the first corner is not that it was a do or die manoeuvre - most of us would have had a certain sympathy with him in that case - but that, despite conceding the corner to the two Mercs - he was off the throttle some time before braking - he still managed to lock up and drive into Bottas.
Bottas and Hamilton braked in clean air, Vettel had dirty air. swisstoni said:

Vettel knows, like the rest of us, that F1 is the new speedway and the first to the corner wins. Ergo, it’s do or die in getting to the corner ahead of anyone else.
But there's also boring old accumulating as many points as possible.Dr Z said:

All not exactly necessary of course but it's an asset to the site to have all the info in one easy to find post on page one

I know, you know and I'm sure my wife, a keenish fan of F1, knows the problem with this. It's bandied around commentaries of many races. The question that bemuses me is why Vettel brake as late as he did? He must have know he was compromised.I know it is all too easy to misread replays, even in slo-mo, but my feeling was that Hamilton braked early, or rather earlier than one might expect, especially so when one considers that Bottas was on his outside, and going a bit faster. If so, then perhaps Vettel has an excuse, or rather a reason. If not then the error is his.
Clever move by the two Mercs, or so I thought. I reckon they were trying to feed Vertappen a chance at Vettel. Given the speed Verstappen was carrying into the corner, right up until he saw the danger, I reckon he'd have done so if he'd stayed on the circuit.
It's the old cry; what might have been if only the drivers hadn't hit one-another.

Or a moment of red mist after realising that Bottas & Hamilton boxed him in and hit Bottas intentionally.
Bottas is getting a bit more bold in the first corner, isn't he? Verstappen around the outside in Canada and Vettel here in PR.
I'd like him to try the outside of Hamilton once, just for fun to see what happens.
I remarked at the time I thought LH and VB intentionally boxed SV in on the long run down.
There must have been some serious talk about it at the qually debrief-just how were they going to mitigate SV with the better starting tyres? I didn’t catch it myself but my father who I watched it with heard they were expected to net 8m on the launch.
It may have just been a coincidence of course.
If it was planned, it does of course put VB in the position of no2.

That would be funny actually.
Let's admit it; it's something we all want to see. I've been getting to like Bottas despite him going walkabout on occasion. I know you can't tell much from their TV face, but he seems ready to answer questions as honestly as allowed and makes few excuses. He seems like somoen you wouldn't mind sharing a car with to go to a race.

IMO, Vettel has a blind spot in situations where there is some perceived injustice towards himself, think Baku last year. Either he realised late what was happening with Bottas boxing him in and tried to back out of it, misjudged the braking point, locked up and hit Bottas unwittingly.

I see what you mean. I reckon Vettel (yeah, I know, doesn't make me an F1 pundit) and Baku last season came as a bit of a shock. Mind you, any driver doing that would have made my eyes open, but Vettel, fighting for the WDC? Amateurish at best. He was lucky to get away with a time penalty I thought. I didn't, and doesn't, make any sense. Or a moment of red mist after realising that Bottas & Hamilton boxed him in and hit Bottas intentionally.
Deliberately trying to compromise Bottas' line I'll have, but surely not actually driving into him? I can't see him not realising he was being boxed in. If you listen to the video you can hear him lifting off well before he needed to.
It's an odd one though. He's a better driver than mistaking a braking point. I wonder if he was looking for Verstappen?
'He's alongside you.'
What do you reckon? Is there anything wrong with boxing in at the start? I had the feeling that Hamilton eased off a bit on the run before the corner once Bottas was alongside Vettel.
To me it looks like Mercedes were trying to force a mistake from vettel, obviously it didn't go quite to plan compromising bottas' race but Hamilton took full advantage making vettel look bad. I reckon the mind games are well underway.
All my opinion obviously.
I wonder how much abuse vettels engine took, will it compromise the engine later in the season?

They or maybe Hamilton may have tactically boxed vettel in but I doubt the intention was to force error - the mercs were both potential fallout. Think vettel just lost his rag a bit tbh.All my opinion obviously.

Or just a bit of front end downforce from following Lewis too closely (having different tyres gave him that cracking start) and thus locked up. I thought it was racing....Jasandjules said:

Probably a good club to have in the bag as a racer (people are always going to be a bit wary of you) but you can come unstuck quite a bit too.

Yes, that's a fair comment. Probably a good club to have in the bag as a racer (people are always going to be a bit wary as you) but you can come unstuck quite a bit too.
Senna had it too.
