They will run on Petronas next year when they get the Mercedes engine.

It's common to badge fluids in motorsport.

I guess the best example these days is Red Bull drinking Red Bull. No human could consume Red Bull none stop for an entire three day weekend. It could hardly be more obvious it's just their drinks name on another drink, probably water - maybe some vitamin mix in there sometimes.

The point is the brand is visible, there doesn't need to be anymore logic to it than that surely?

Don't tell me that Hamilton's Monster Energy-branded drinks bottle doesn't actually contain Monster Energy drink, or that Max doesn't swig Red Bull during the race.

Also, there's no Father Christmas. It's just your parents. Sorry.

A family member, who worked for Jordan in the early days, once told me that when they switched to Sasol sponsorship, they would get deliveries of empty Sasol drums at the factory which they would then have to fill with Mobil products to be used at the races.

That was the reason no one could find any Rich Energy cans in the shops. The Haas team were drinking it all.

I read somewhere that back in the bad old days of tobacco sponsorship it was rare for a fag packet to contain what it said on the outside e.g. Lotus mechanics smoking Marlboro from JPS packets

this is interesting, I always thought that back in the day at least the oil sponsor did provide oil and that as a result each team had their own engine mappings despite running the same engine.

I think back in the day the Brabham BT52s had Castrol written on the cars, while the barrels sign-written with "BASF via Peenemunde" hehe

peel the labels back and you'd read T-Stoff.

Happened recently, sports presenters in the US with a sponsorship deal for android tablets. Camera caught them from behind with iPads stuck behind their contractually obliged ones.

McLaren blamed the poor performance of their Mercedes engines on using Mobil oil while the Mercedes team used Petronas (I think) which lead to switch to Honda power

Ron went to Honda because he believed a team could no longer win a championship without a factory deal.
There has murmurings about different fuels and lubricants being used to that use by the engine manufacturers as they’re developed in partnership to work with their engine... supposedly.

Last race (or one before) the camera switched to the Red Bull pit wall and the angle showed 4 or 5 of them. Looked like every person had a can of Red Bull. Presume they probably had water in them.

I used to wonder that when you'd get a shot of one of their drivers walking along swigging from a can of Red Bull, surely it wasn't actually Red Bull in the can, hoping it would be either water or their healthy juice concoction.

Once upon a time I had 2 cans of Red Bull, it was on hols at Edinburgh Fringe, I was getting a meal deal or something to eat and I saw an offer for 2 cans and thought yeah go on then, they're only small cans...

I was absolutely wired for the rest of the day hehe

Only had 1 can in my life and it will be my last, I drunk it out of politeness as it was bought for me, fortunately it was a small can, absolutely vile stuff, its the smell of energy drinks too, just so sugary and fake.

I'll stick with a strong black coffee if I need a bit of a boost!

I remember Brundle and and an MP4/9 did the same thing at the Shell garage in Fourwentways in 94. This therefore makes me feel old.
