is it size related or something related to how the wind tunnel reacts under different dynamic conditions? Adrian Newey i think mentioned something about that in his book when talking about the RB wind tunnel.
My understanding is that while the model might be 1/2 sized, the air isn't and the surface roughness isn't. That means the from is the air is effectively full sized and so the results don't directly scale up. The general effectiveness of a wing can still be seen by the old school methods of using smoke or probing the flow with lasers, but some of the fine detail is lost.
I'm sure I've over simplified that mind you!
That’s certainly true. The effect was first noted in ship design - water molecules don’t scale down in the tank.

Reynolds Number is used in the conversion between model and full-size: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reynolds_number

At a simpler level, it is why doubling pipe area doesn’t just double flow. At the surface, fluid molecules are not moving, and their speed increases non-linearly as you move away from the surface. That distribution of speeds is related to the air molecule size, not the surface dimensions, so proportionately it has a greater effect on a smaller model.

I’m not entirely sure the FIA were right to restrict model and tunnel sizes as it isn’t necessarily clear that the size-related costs outweigh the other costs in using this approach, but that’s a separate debate.

Great result (well nearly) for McLaren. What a step up from last year. I expect their motivation must be huge after the misery of previous years.

They seem to be getting a lot out of the engine, and its packaging, at some circuits.

I've been a fan of McL since the start of MP4 in F1. I went off them a bit when Dennis got sacked but, as this didn't make them bring him back, I still followed them. Yesterday was good.

Qually was brilliant but I doubted their ability to carry it through to the race. But they did. That was great.

They are not back yet of course, but on the way.

The Renault engine seems strong and powerful. I wonder if Horner is regretting his move.

Was it that good a result, another lap and Sainz would have finished a lap down.
They may have had a better weekend but there's still a lot of catching up to do.
And they'll never win again with a customer engine.

A lap down yes, but because he didn't need to push any harder - he wasn't going to catch anyone in front and nobody behind was troubling him - and was just managing the pace, it's a very deceptive statistic to use.

McLaren got screwed by Mercedes in 2014. A works engine is the only way. They won't actively slow you down, but they sure as hell won't accommodate your input.

Saw this on Twitter, got to say I'm impressed with both Lando and George Russell. They've both come in, no pretense or ego, and just having fun. I like that.

One thing that seems to be under the radar a bit this year is how well Sainz is performing. He's even leading the F1.5 championship by a good chunk so far this year. Mclaren imo have 3rd best pairing this year imo with Mercedes/Renault joint first.

Not in Zak's day- whatever it was, it's been taken down.

P4 start for Lando tomorrow and I don’t even think he has the new Renault engine spec that Carlos has yet.

A lap down on one Honda, but ahead of all the others, and well ahead of the factory Renaults too.

I think the 4 Renaults probably put manners on the 4 hondas. Strong showing by McLaren today. Two good drivers

Edited, average finishing position of 9.25 for each car so the same. However allowing for Ted Bulls genius designer/chassis unless McLaren and Renault are packing some serious chassis tricks of their own it’s safe to say Honda are not yet clear of the Renault PU. Especially as Albon took two new engines this weekend...
