Long shot here.

The EX470 was a Windows only bit of kit. The EX495 was Windows too, but could be used with a MacOs too.

What I need to know is if it is possible to convert the 470 to use MacOs.

HP support are just giving me the run around. I think most were not born when the 470 was built!

Anyway, if anyone has any insights, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks folks.

PS. Pricing up a Synology alternative is frightening :-(

How so? The EX470 cost £399 with one 500Gb disk. A Synology DS418play which really is the mutts nuts supporting multiple 4K streams is £430 from eBuyer. Disks cost the same for both media servers.

1. I paid £480.89 in 2008 for the 1Tb Ex475

2. If I can hack/upgrade it, should not cost very much, and it will serve for a while.

3. If I have to get new kit, I will use the opportunity to upgrade and future proof.

4. I've spec'd a Sinology DS418 4 bay 8Tb around £700

5. £700 v. almost nothing is where the pain comes from.

But thanks fr the help on the possibility of upgrading the HP.

No worries, you’re welcome

If you go the replacement route, I ‘d recommend getting decent sized disks - sweet spot is probably 2 x 8TB WD Reds now, add more when you can afford it
