Broughton and co must have been laughing when they said that.
Why would they be laughing? They took it to arbitration with the FIA and lost. You think it was a stunt? It may not have been a stunt, but a serious group of people looking to introduce a challenging and provocative idea into the mix - thought through - wouldn’t do it they did.
They either were living off fumes on some idea they were the coming disruptive force to the sport, or didn’t plan long enough to gauge if strategically they’d get strong paddock support and would win through.
On the surface, funky haired champion driver with enough recent credit for sponsors to think he’s still got it. His best mate, ski couch, who’d “managed his career”. Reynard. Nice guy. Surely has ability to do the car. Oh what a dream team. Let’s go out there and shake things up!
What ultimately happens: you’ve got JV wishing he could be in a proper car, but had now entered the entrails of his career. Pollock? What did he ever really bring to the table. PURE drama. Reynard, bankrupt, history judging him as never really being a prime time F1 guy. Failure. Lots of talk on how they were winning from the start. Yet even before term starts they’re getting a ticking off by the Rule Makers.
Yeah they’re laughing. They weren’t a serious outfit to begin with, thinking st through!
