Why do people feel the need to comment on how I spend my money?

I sold an old bike and did some overtime at work, with that money I have brought a paddle board. It was £300, reduced from £550 and a decent brand. It was one, if not the cheapest that was suitable for me (I have to pay fat tax ha).

I've had friends say I should put it towards a newer car. I have a 2003 330D that is fine at the moment. Yeah it's got nearly 180K on it, but other than a couple of cosmetic issues it's fine (it will need a new gearbox somewhen, but it's shed money so when it goes I'll either buy a new car or get it fixed).

My otherhalf commented to my parents the money should have gone to pay off a loan I have. The loan is manageable and I have a second job that covers that each month.

I've had it since Wednesday and already been out for five/six hours. It gets me out the house for a few hours, only costs me parking money and more importantly, I enjoy it.

Not the best rant I know...does anyone else get comments on what they buy and how do you deal with it?

Really? I don’t think anyone has commented (recently) on how I should spend my money. If they did, I’d kindly tell them to F off!

Get lots of people saying I spend to much on cars for my income and age, they may be right but it's still none of their bloody business. I'm not in any sort of debt, I pay my way for everything dont smoke dont do drugs and drink a negligible amount and I save what's leftover. Everyone else can go swivel as far as im concerned.

If it puts a smile on your face and doesn't leave you or your close ones struggling then who cares?

Not to come across as too powerfully built but it's a few hundred quid, it's not like you've just emptied your bank account for a brand new performance car at the expense of feeding your family.

Enjoy your board!

Agree with the above, none of anyone else’s business as long as you’re not bankrupting the family for the hell of it.

It’s not a massive sum so would hardly have provided an upgraded car or settled a loan like others suggested ...

However; I’d be totally livid if my O/H started at my parents about how I chose to spend my cash raised by means of a sale and overtime so it’s not even out of the ‘normal’ pot ... that’s just unacceptable in my eyes

The Mrs and I get around that by having a shared account we both put an agreed amount in that the bills and a bit of joint saving goes in. After that our own money is fair game. She doesn't complain about my garage full of bikes and I don't complain about her room full of nail varnish.

Likewise, but then I don't tend to tell people what I spend on things.

Exactly the same here. We have a joint account for the house/bills that we have standing orders pay a set amount into each month. What's left is our own to do what we please with.
We also have a joint savings account that we bung £100 each a month into for holidays.

If someone moaned at me for the car I drove or what I spend my money on I'd tell them to mind my own business. I'm loan free but even when I wasn't having a loan doesn't mean I couldnt buy myself things, what a stupid thing to say.

This is funny

Everyone’s saying your money spend it how you like, unless it’s a monthly payment for a car, then you’re wrong

It sounds to me like the OP pays way too much attention to what other people think. Asking here is just another layer/instance of this!

Not to be devils advocate on this, but...

I can see where your OH is coming from, that you have a loan and its manageable, but the moment you come into a bit of money, you have spent in on yourself rather than reduce the loan that you have.

I dont pretend to even know how that loan affects your family life, but if she is complaining about it, then I would suspect its a little bit.

Would the loan not have benefitted from 350 taken off it instead? Or at least a bit more discussion on the SUP first to your OH as she is obviously not happy in the situation.

Now if you didnt have any loans and people were complaining, then fk em all, but this is not the case.

"You wanna sell that car, you never use it"

I use it a lot. I think most folk don't understand why have more than one car.

I can't drive them both at once

Anyway mind you own business

I spend about 25% of my income on motorcycles and pushbikes, the rest goes into mortgage, savings and on the usual monthlys (food, fuel, cars electric etc).

I could have the mortgage done with far quicker if I cut down on the two wheeled activitites but I don't regret a penny spent on them when I see my mortgage balance.

As always life is a balance, I drive a £500 battered diesel focus and on the face of it could do with a new car according to most people. It's mechanically fine but isn't new and certainly looks out of place in the work car park.

My view is minimise the cost of the boring stuff, be responsible with money but enjoy life as much as you can at the same time. It sounds like that's what you're doing (assuming the loan isn't ridiculous in terms of interest), but even then you don't say how much of your money goes on the boring stuff and how much is for fun. 350 quid from working a little extra and the sale of something you don't use on something that puts a grin on your face and helps you stay healthy sounds spot on to me.

When did you last spend anything on her of for both of you?

Also what % of the debt would this represent or how many months payments?
