They came from Germany. We all know how efficient they are there!

This is the one thing that’s been baffling me. Was he already on a transplant list or was he incredibly lucky for a matched donor lung to become available at just the right time. Or is it all about money?

Well wheres the benefit of having a pool of young racing drivers paid for by the team if you can't harvest an organ or two.

Fingers crossed for a swift recovery.

His honest answers to press questions are always refreshing.

A true legend and it pleases me that he's still involved in the sport. I too wish him a speedy recovery.

I'd be interested to know as well, as I need a new set myself.

While it’s finny I remember that he choose not to have any surgery to repair his face and the reason was people have to accept him as he is.

Finny it might be but funny, I don't think so. Unless you're a kind of person who also likes to take the piss out of people's misfortune in general, e.g. is Schumacher and his accident funny?

This exactly. A honest breath of fresh air amongst all the other team PR dribble.

Get well soon Niki.

Same here. Hope he makes a full recovery.

I'm pretty sure the affects of the 1976 accident have done serious damage to his lungs.
My thoughts too, Eric.
Alistair cauldwell in his podcast said it was the fire extinguisher material and not the smoke which damaged his lungs.

One aspect of Lauda's situation that Klepetko did clarify was that his fiery accident at the Nurburgring in 1976 had had no bearing on the decision to replace his lungs. "One can absolutely assume that lung transplantation is not a late consequence of the fire accident," he said.

It was the weekend I had travelled to the UK for the big Greenham Common Air Show of 1976 and I had travelled back to Ireland on the overnight Holyhead car ferry. I read the headline on a newspaper of a Monday morning commuter who was reading his paper on the train I took into Dublin city centre from Dun Laoghaire ferry port.

That was the first time I'd heard the news.
I'm sorrybut this was most pointless information I've read in a while. 😁I want 5sec of my life back!

How disgraceful, I think that was an interesting insight into how life used to be back in the 70's. hehe

Just been reading up on this and looks like they only put one lung in. Also sounds like they had to remove both old lungs prior to the transplant as his immune system was attacking the lungs and he was being oxygenated mechanically for a few days. They say he will probably remain in hospital for another few weeks. I doubt we will see him again this year TBH but sounds like he is "doing a Herbert" in terms of his physiotherapy etc!
