Quite a classy way to do it on Twitter I thought.

I guess that was inevitable.. I wonder who McLaren are going to get in. Will they try for someone with a WDC?

Question is... who would want to go to Mclaren

Where will Alonso go, WEC & Indycar with a few other one offs maybe?

Goodbye to the best F1 driver of a generation. Immensely talented and quick, he could and should have won more races and championships, but for a number of reasons, some external, some due to himself, and some just pure bad luck, 2 WDC is what he'll stay in history with. A living proof, if you ever needed one, that numbers don't tell the whole story...

Indycar. Got 2 x Monaco and 1 x Le Mans. After that, it'll be interesting, if there is an after that in racing.

F1 will be much diminished without Fernando. He is undoubtedly a great driver behind the wheel, but he didn’t achieve as much in his career as he should have done.

The true greats make sure they are in right team at the right time. Schumacher, Prost, Senna, Hamilton & Vettel all made very smart moves at the right moments.

Alonso made too many wrong moves, pissed off too many people and burned too many bridges to become a legend.

Apart from his championship seasons, I will always remember the extraordinary way he came within a whisker of winning in 2012, in what was at best the third fastest car.

Best is a funny word. He may well have been the driver of his generation regarding potential. He had opportunities of realising it a few times.

He's great to watch. All the great/best drivers shine in mediocre cars, and his Ferrari years showed his class.

I'm not 100% with Autosport with regards:

"He switched to McLaren for 2015, tempted by the prospect of restoring the ailing team to its recent former glories with the help of the full power of returning manufacturer Honda."

I've got my own suspicions of what tempted him.

He's very much a case of what might have been. Such a shame. Over the last 20 years, I'd say there have been WDC winners with less raw talent.

He could could have a lot of fun in Indycar. That’s where I’d say he goes if he’s up for it.

Pure racer. Knew Fernando was class when Ralph Schumacher punted him into the Monaco tunnel wall at 220kph in 2004. Whilst still crashing his 3 wheeler, Fernando had the presence of mind to take his hand off the wheel and give Ralph the bird. After that he won 2 championships.

Hope he goes on to achieve his post F1 life's ambitions.

I wonder how much better his career would have been had he not been a pal and managed by a certain interesting Italian fella.

2 WDC crowns, more money than he can spend, health intact, lots of tasty anecdotes for his grandchildren.

It could have been worse.

He had a varied and at times very controversial F1 career.

Be sad to see him leave F1; despite the lack of recent success he mostly kept his head down and even from the mid/back of the pack provided entertainment in one form or the other.

This was funny indeed.

However this told a truer story. frown

"McLaren. Fernando is faster than you. Can you confirm you understand that message?"

Good luck Fred. Stay safe the rest of this season and onwards.

Sad day for F1.

Always hoped he would land a top drive again to battle Hamilton, Vettel etc. but it never happened.

Indy car Championship title then back into F1 biggrin

He's been in the wrong car a few times, and he's been a few points away from being champ a few times. The one moment when you could tell that racing is everything to him was Brazil 2012, Seb had won the championship, Alonso was out of the car just staring over and thinking what might have been.

Kind of a pity but also a bit like putting a sick animal out of it's misery - I mean, should he be in a front runner winning not a backmarker.

Yep, only change I would make is 'one of the best'.

It's too difficult to compare effectively.

Not a fan in some ways, but there is no doubting the man's talent. But for 7 points he'd have been a 4 time WDC and that would have been about right to be honest. I think in some ways he's his own worst enemy, but that goes for others too.

I wish him all the best in Indycar and hope he gets the triple crown.

The lasting question is whether F1 is the worse for his absence and I think it will be sadly.
