...thoughts? too soon for him? can McLaren give him a car to match his talents? should he have spent a year at a smaller team first (and probably have a better car!)

As long as his talents are completely useless, then yes they can!

Does it really warrant it's own thread when it is already being discussed here?

Good luck to him but as McLaren are not performing well if could ruin his F1 career.

I'm guessing that Vandoorne will no longer be in F1 after this year.

also can we expect fireworks. An experienced Spaniard joins McLaren from Renault, and a rookie British driver makes the jump up to McLaren from F2.....

its 2007 all over again :-p

....slight difference in the competitiveness of McLaren mind you

yeh this is the bit I'm worried about for Llando. clearly a talent..but McLaren really need to step things up.

il be honest though, Vandoorne hasn't really impressed at McLaren. even if they don't give you the car, you've got to match your teammate.

Norris is some real talent, I really hope a bad car an McLaren does not ruin his career before it really gets going in F1.

This, the McLaren quagmire has done for Vandoorne it seems and there do not seem to be any hopes of a turnaround any time soon.

It’ll be interesting to see how he goes. According to Brownnose Benson the decision was all but made a while back:

“when he began the F2 season impressively, with a win in the first race and an early championship lead, the decision was pretty much made to promote him.”

But he’s not looked anything truly special recently, Russell has looked better.

Time will tell; as has been said, the teams know better than posters on the internet.

They did OK nuturing Lewis H when he joined.
but made a pigs ear with Kovalinen, Perez, Magnussen and now Vandoorne.

I think measuring himself against Sainz will be more favourable than Vandoorne had against Alonso.

Although you could also say that Hamilton only realised his true potential after leaving McLaren.

Hamilton since leaving McLaren:

Wins - 47
Titles - 3

McLaren since Hamilton left:

Wins: - 0
Titles: - 0

McLaren trying to get the second Max? Good to have young and hungry drivers on the grid, LeClerc and Gasly seem to wring the neck out of their cars.

The real fun is going to be to see how he stacks up against Sainz.
