Change qualifying

Don't change qualifying. It's the most interesting part of most races.
To be honest the races are so f**king dull they would do better to just do 3 rounds of qualifying and award points from those. To mix things up everyone would have to do a lap with Pastor Maldonardo and Karun Chandok also out on track being playing the roles of mobile chicanes - just to spice things up a bit.jpf said:
In major sports, the team that wins the trophy gets the last draft pick. Is there something similar that can be done to make the racing more compelling?
Do the same in F1. Make all drivers have one year contracts, so they are free agents at the beginning of each season. Then the lowest place team from the last season gets first pick of drivers.I lost all interest in F1 the last time I watched it live which was the final season before the hybrids. The cars in qualifying trim were incredible, dancing on the edge with amazing fast gearshifts. Come the race and they looked like barges. Seconds a lap slower and lethargic.
Probably even worse now as they still have the heavy fuel loads but have to manage the engines even more.
If I ever went back to a GP the only session I would bother watching would be qualifying and, as Sochi showed, even that is getting more and more compromised with the engine rules.

As things stand now, the results of a F1 race are largely determined by qualifying.
You need rain to spice things up which doesn't happen often enough.
What would happen if every team was guaranteed one race per season where they would start on the front row as long as they were within 7% of the fastest car?
What would happen if every team was guaranteed one race per season where they had to start at the back of the pack?

It would all be a bit st.
I notice nobody commented on my idea - well admittedly it was a bit tongue in cheek. Here's a better one. Scrap qualifying, for the first race of the season, grid positions are decided by a draw, and thereafter, by the finishing order in the previous race.
Yes, I know what you're all going to say - what are we all going to watch on Saturday afternoon? Well, the empty spot is filled by a F2 race. Last on the grid for the F1 race is excluded, and his seat is taken by the winner of the F2 race.

nah 3's enough. There's plenty of scope to screw it up, and theres time to do it properly, altering it engineer-in anxiety from forced mistakes seems a bit false to me.https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/formula-1-could...
In fact the current F1 qually format could be considered one of the sucesses as a lot of other motorsports have since adopted similar knockout round qualifying.

Why not split it into 20x3 minutes blocks, one car eliminated each time. Can you imagine the excitement. https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/formula-1-could...
I love the current qualifying format, the best bit of the weekend.
If I had to change it I'd do 1x20 minute session where the top 10 go through into 1 at a time for single lap qualifying pole position shootout.
But I wouldn't half mind seeing this:

Start the race with an old style Le Mans start where they have to run across the track to the cars, but let them pick which car to run for. First one to the Mercedes gets it.

Top 1, 2, 3 in qualifying finish 1, 2, 3--same order as qualifying.
The potential of f1 is immense. If the race is effectively qualifying, the actual race is anti-climatic. I doubt f1 wants that.
