Seems like a sensible move to me. The average person who watches a race doesn`t care what the actual makeup of the compound is, just if it is hard, medium or soft. Pirelli will still release the technical specs before each weekend explaining what the actual compounds are for those who are bothered.
Why make it any more complex than it needs to be for the casual viewer.

There are five tyres types & of the first four races three will use compounds 2,3 & 4, so white, yellow & red. Seems clear enough. Bahrain will use compunds 1,2 & 3. That's white, white with a stripe & yellow. When the tyres are going round how are the viewers going to quickly tell the difference between the first two?

The fact that someone is on a "soft" tyre and someone else is on a "medium" is all that is really relevant within the race itself. The fact that the soft might be two levels softer than the one used at the previous race is totally irrelevant to what goes on in the current race.

Odd. I thought we were going to have white, yellow and red tyres at each grand prix, but with the colour mapping to a different compound depending on the demands of he circuit. I'm not opposed to renaming the tyres simply soft, medium and hard, but it seems that we'll now no longer be able to tell the difference between the soft (1) & medium (2) or the medium (4) & hard (5), and we're pretty much guaranteed that commentators will refer to them as compounds 1 to 5.https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/barcelona-testi...

Crofty won't be able to help himself. "Vettel is on the red-marked tyre - that's the red tyre with a stripe, as opposed to the red tyre without a stripe - which is compound number two, which is the medium this weekend". I don't really see how that's an improvement on "Vettel is on the ultra-soft".

I agree, it's a sensible move.Only F1 geeks will care that the softs are the same compound as the mediums in the previous race and I'm sure this information will be readily available.

Can they also sort out this weekend tyre thing. As CH suggested why not have tyres per session or day. That way we would not have spectators sitting in the rain watching an empty track and TV companies filming drivers playing angry birds because they are saving inters for Quali and Sunday. I would still keep the Quali 2 tyre to start the race on for the top 10 though.

We've had that and guess what? Everyone bhed and whined that the race was over by the end of the first lap and wouldn't it be great if the tyres degraded.It was the fans that asked, via the FIA fan survey, for tyres that degraded after a great Canadian GP where the tyres wore rapidly and unexpectedly a good few years back.
