I recall at the time thinking there was similarity to Hill's move to Arrows. Hill said that he had been convinced by Walkinshaw's intents and plans in the same way Ross Brawn and Lauda had 'sold' Mercedes to Hamilton. Worked slightly better for one than the other!
I remember seeing Damon at Silverstone in the Arrows, with the number 1 on it, slowly picking up places until he was in the points. The crowd were going mad. It was like he had won the race laugh

I remember at the time thinking that it was a massive gamble, and if it paid off he would look prescient and if it did not then he would look like an utter berk. As it turned out, it was the former. That does not in any way alter the fact that it was an enormous risk. What is "obvious" with hindsight was not so at the time.

Not really the same though as McLaren didn't want Hamilton to go, Williams weren't as keen to keep Hill.

It could have looked like a massive gamble from the outside but one assumes Hamilton had a fair bit more info about personnel, investment plans, development work, etc etc. Before he committed. So still a gamble, but maybe a smaller one.
Almost certainly. However, one could equally argue that Alonso's disastrous team move choices should have been equally well-researched. The "leave him alone, he knows what he's doing" argument doesn't always hold. smile

My point was that hindsight is a wonderful thing and those at the time who were saying Hamilton's move was risky were making a fair observation. The fact that it turned out to be a shrewd move doesn't alter the fact.

Yes, Seb handled the situation very well, broke off from the interview to congratulate Lewis and showed that he has a great deal of humility, he also went into the Mercedes garage later on to congratulate Lewis's team, another nice touch. I'm a big Hamilton fan and he's done brilliantly to get his 5th title, but I though he could have stopped waving at the crowd for just 10 seconds to properly listen to what Seb was saying to him.

The Mercedes looks to have a real problem eating it's tyres, whatever they have done to the set-up it's clearly too aggressive on the front tyres. RB and Ferrari have similar pace, but when Kimi can finish 3rd on a one-stop and when Bottas needed 3 stops there must be a real problem with aero and grip.

Ricc spent a few laps close behind Hamilton and then a little later his engine went bang. Coincidence or are there cooling problems with the RBs.
I believe the RB failure was hydraulic. Although I suppose it’s conceivable that this was heat related, I don’t think his engine went bang as such.
Obviously Mexico's special in terms of engine cooling but he didn't spend that long and we've seen his team mate spend half the race making his way through how many times this year?

The non driver fault fail rate of Danny's car in relation to his team mate is difficult to take literally at this point.

He actually broke it off because Coultard asked him a real dick question which tipped him over the edge so he walked away.

Indeed, Williams had a track record of sacking world champion drivers. laugh

Frank Williams pretty much had a policy of ditching drivers who got too big for their boots (in his mind) on salary demands due to now being a WDC. He always considered drivers to be a fairly minor part of the equation, so had no qualms about letting a recently-crowned WDC go. He did it many times.

Mercedes are going to be incandescent if they don’t win the Constructors.
Yep a very real possibility with the way their cars have started eating tyres. As happy as they will be that Lewis has wrapped up the drivers championship, they will have some serious concerns going into the last two races.
Mercedes are 55 points ahead with 86 points left available. If Ferrari win it I think Bottas's position will come under very heavy scrutiny. Being lapped is just not good enough.

That's one of the reasons I've no sympathy with their current poistion. I'm pleased the attitude has worked out so well for them.

Seb and Toto are often chatting and in all seriousness I do think there is an element of Vettel keeping the doors open at other teams as he is often seen chatting to the Red Bull guys too. Sensible chap in my opinion.

I just wonder if he (seb) can come back stronger next year, I hope so the stronger the opposition the better the racing for all involved.
