That's my view, I said something similar a few posts back: Why not try something, even if it's just to set the car up specifically to be strong at a handful of circuits? It would surely be better this year to have 1 or 2 midfield finishes as opposed to all back row finishes? Even if the car is technically weaker overall, the sponsors/fans will largely see the points they could win at the circuits they would be strong at, and have something positive to focus on/celebrate.
As you say though, this is year three (probably..) seriously on their backsides - no way of knowing how much talent has wandered off or become disillusioned in that time.
I believe they tried tricks and gimmicks around 2017/18 just as Mclaren did a few years earlier. Just as Mclaren did, Williams now needed to stop looking for the silver bullet and build a car which will arm their drivers with some kind of baseline over the course of the season. As you say though, this is year three (probably..) seriously on their backsides - no way of knowing how much talent has wandered off or become disillusioned in that time.
Williams were chastened last year. The 2019 campaign was an embarrassment.
I think they have probably turned up with pretty much the car they would've wanted to have turned up to last year's testing with. Hopefully they have tackled their production issues such that the durability of parts and the availability of spares isn't such a problem. The car looks much more effective from the on-boards, it clearly has more downforce everywhere.
I can't imagine anybody being slower than Williams but hopefully they won't be far from the back of Class 'B' this season. It’ll be a grind but if they aren’t fighting fires internally, maybe they’ll be in the position to raise their ambitions for 2021.

That's fair enough. If they're still 'last' (looks from performance on the soft that they will be) then fingers crossed it's last but close, not stone dead last. That in itself would be a marked improvement, odd as that sounds to say!Williams were chastened last year. The 2019 campaign was an embarrassment.

Speaking of being closer to the back, HAAS look to have struggled in some way through testing so far and are only just ahead of Williams. Too early to say but if Haas have a problem car this season, that could be great news for Williams.

I was once told a story by a good mate who ‘knew’ her at uni. Ever since I’ve wanted to know if it’s true as I still find it amusing. https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/f6bept/...

I wonder what happens to Jamie Chadwick now? I know she's retained but how does that work when they have added Jack Aitken, Roy Nissany & Dan Ticktum? How many simulators do they have at Williams..?
I would have thought that having one, maybe two was enough and anything more than that is perhaps too many voices for useful input. I'm well aware they've signed this bunch for the £££, which makes some sense. But I also wonder if in the end, it's counter-productive in terms of actual development and learning.
