The gap was 0.7 last year and that was a very close season until Seb and Ferrari combusted. You can’t say this season is going to be a bore fest after one qualifying session.

Lots of professional journalists should feel very very stupid about now.

Wow, just woke up and I see Ferrari have sand bagged themselves all the way to second and third row!

What a cunning game they play wink

The biggest story of the day is surely WHAT STRANGE CREATURE IS RESIDING ON SEBASTIEN'S TOP LIP yikes
He's going full retro Nigel. I think he should grow a big pair of Emerson/Sir Jackie style mutton chops.

Another year of poor results coming from Renault. At least Riccardo got a huge pay deal. Mercedes just seem untouchable. I don't know enough about the impact of the car(a lot I would guess) but the new Ferrari boy looks good.

0.7 seconds is massive. This season will be about how easy Merc can treat their cats and still win by half a lap.
They just need to stroke them around the lap getmecoat
I think it’ll be closer than you think. But they’ll still win by a whisker.

So glad I haven’t subscribed. I nearly fell for the Merc sandbagging but had my suspicions.

I wouldn't be so sure, I remember saying the same this time last season and by the end of the race I was eating my words.

It's mentioned above but the onboard from the Merc looks too stiff, it's extremely rigid and the feedback through the wheel looks manic. My limited knowledge would tell me that car may end up eating tyres, whereas you look at the donkey and RBs and they're utterly planted.

Will make for an interesting race tomorrow.

I know that no one knew the relative performances of the cars before this weekend but there are some surprises in the times, not the least being the 7/10s Hamilton has over Vettel. I was hoping for Ferrari to top the times - I've nothing against Merc or Hamilton, just wanted a challenge - or at the very least to be close. This is disappointing to say the very least.

HAAS up there again for the Ozzy GP. Let's hope they don't mess it all up again. That was a farce last season.

McLaren, at least in the hands of Norris, quite impressive, and the best of the rest, but early days. Sainz not showing well.

Williams though. The car's worse than last season's.

The timings do not suggest an exciting season at the front, but the midfield promises to be edge of the seat stuff.

"interviews hosted by Paul Do Resta".....yay.
Yeah... As a first experience of Skys offering, its pretty.. average.
He just sucks all the life and energy out of me every time he opens his mouth, monotone voice and just utterly boring with an air of "look at me" about him, sack him off, it's time, get Karun in his place full time.
How the fk has he got this gig? You've summed it up perfectly, he sucks the life out of the screen. He's achieved fk all in F1 and is also dull as ditchwater. The mind boggles.

To be fair DS Sainz would have been around / ahead of Lando if he hadn't caught the punctured Kubica at exactly the wrong point on the track without the time to go again....his starting position really isn't reflective I don't think.

what are thoughts on RedBull and Honda engines. Is reliability the big issue. It seems to have plenty of power

The Merc does look quick. But since when hace the very fastest racecars looked smooth and easy to drive.

To me it shows the difference in driver ability. Lewis seems to like a car on the edge and can get the best out of it making lots of adjustments through the corners. Schumacher was the same.

Seb seems to need a car that is easy to drive and doesn't appear to have the same ability to take the car to the edge and keep it there.

One other thing I've noticed that I don't recall seeing mentioned anywhere. Is the size of Lewis. He looks like he has put on quite a bit of muscle over the winter to take advantage of the new driver weight regs. If he is stronger than last year he will be very very hard to beat.

I think this year they're, Mercedes have two teams to keep at bay smile

I think RB + Honda clearly is working well, and although he's a tit, I have to admit Horner was right to switch. I can only imagine how annoyed McLaren are that they effectively paid for years of Honda development with crap results, to now have the finished product perform so well in the hands of RB!!

If Honda haven't managed to produce a reliable, reasonably powerful engine after all this time they need to leave the sport.

Could it be the car set up. Aero etc? Then again, the McLaren seems faster than Renaults own cars so they must be on point

He said in an article this week the car and driver weights being seperate has helped him, he ate pancakes and cheetos but the last month trained with a lifelong vegan and some athletes, also said he's put 4lb of muscle on

I really want Honda to do well. I'd be surprised if they don't get to the top. They know how to make great engines

I think the question is whether Newey's aero has demanded too many compromises for the engine. Cooling has been a problem for RB for many seasons and the Honda engine, or at least the old one, needed a fair bit of volume.

The good thing about it is that we'll see.

Lewis did the job when it needed. Quali and race are different kettles of fish though so will see tomorrow. Not Mercedes fault they do a great job.
