Nearly 6 seconds off the pace...

He can blame the car for the first 4 seconds of that. The last 2 were his. Russell underlined that fact.

It's interesting that we have a team here that can ONLY fight with themselves. P18? That's just a pipe dream for both these guys.
He hit the wall and got a puncture.

That Mercedes looks like a handful. It’ll be interesting how it goes over a race distance .
This - it looked very twitchy even in a straight line. Stiff setup?

I think Will Buxton would be my choice instead of PDR, surprised sky didn't pick him up
I think PDR is fine. Far prefer someone who has pedalled the machines in question. He's cheered up fair bit too over the years.

‘Pleasantly surprised’ is Toto’s default setting. It’s infuriating hehe

It's also very ominous for Kubica.
How many races do we give him before he is replaced by Latifi? (Presuming he has enough super licence points)
I think if the 2 second margin remains to Russell then Kubica himself will call it, let's hope that's not the case.

Presumably he won't hit the wall in every quali session....

Not sure if he's intentionally mimicking Arnie or not now.

Ok, he can blame himself, or that wall biggrin

In reality I think he can blame the car. Both drivers have said the cars slide and snap.

Looks like Red Bull have pretty much caught Ferrari too.
With THAT engine!

Charles has fallen nicely into number 2 support driver spot.

FYI she was being filmed the whole time by a Netflix crew.
Given the This is Sunderland and now Williams it might be best to say no to them in future!

Hamilton pole by at least 2/10ths....

Will we see a 1.20 or better pole time, I think so..

McLaren and Hass have both showed decent long run pace, I expect to see these head the midfield.
Good work - posted around a week ago, and about the only post not to say Ferrari winning (and many saying Lecler also beating Vettel).

Just as a reminder of the 2018 Q3 session:

Vettel was a full 0.674 seconds behind Hamilton and Max was only 0.041 seconds behind Vettel.

The results of the season certainly didn't reflect those numbers.

I wouldn't get too despondent and write 2019 off as boring or a Mercedes walk-over just yet.

Lewis did the job when it needed. Quali and race are different kettles of fish though so will see tomorrow. Not Mercedes fault they do a great job.

I hear what people are saying about it not being a representative track and last year proved that but I really think Mercedes will dominate the season now; I reckon the twitchy car is designed in and will help their performance on the narrower/street tracks where they were not so strong last year.

I also think the gap is biggger this year in real terms - it was 7 tenths between Mercedes and Ferrari last year and it is 7 tenths this, but the pole lap last year was a 1:21:1 vs 1:20.5 this - so as a proportion of the lap time it’s a bigger gap.

I hope I am wrong.

I get your logic, but you're talking barely a few metres at best. The gap is still 7/10ths, same as it was last year at a weird track identical to nothing else on the calendar.

Just started watching qualifying..not seen the results so this is a live programme for me

Glad they kept the music when they go through the track and drivers..reminds me of mortal kombat

Heres hoping for a good quali and excellent race tomorrow..not bothered about crashes its all about the overtaking and wheel to wheel racing.

P.8 Lando Norris.. beer Surely the outstanding drive of the day..

Well done Hamilton. Ferrari aren't as fast as the hype suggested. Mercedes are still the car to beat.

I just finished watching qualifying in full. It strikes me that the Mercedes cars look like they need so much driving! They are literally steering to go in a straight line, every tiny bump and imperfection in the track appears to move the car and has to be compensated for with constant steering input.

If you watch them driving, the effort both drivers are making is intense. I've never seen anything quite like it in modern F1. It's obviously working though, they have embraced stiffness and rigidity in the extreme and found an advantage.

All through testing we were commenting on how smooth and tidy some of the cars looked, and now Mercedes rock up with a car that looks like it's having a fit but locks out the front grid smile

I swear the car they had at testing was not so frantic. Valterri and Lewis must be knackered.

Supporting hamilton but always had a soft spot for smiley guy (danny ric)

If ferrari and merc and bottas and hamilton are gonna be so far apart then its gonna eb boring..please let the races not reflect how fast mercs are in qualifying
