I'm presuming Grosjean brings significant funding with him. Half of which probably goes towards repairs to his car and the other half on counselling for his engineers who have to listen to has incessant whining over the radio.

What was Romain's best season? I seem to recall him jumping to Haas from Lotus seemed like a brave move at the time, though now it looks inspired if he can outlast Hulkenberg in F1.

10 podiums vs. None is why he will outlast Mr. Bang Average in F1.

10 podiums in a car capable of getting podiums - big difference. Look at what Raikkonen was achieving in those Lotus-Renaults - title contender for most of 2012. Grosjean's last podium was way back in 2015 when his Lotus had Mercedes power, he's done nothing since. Who has he outpointed? Maldonado and Gutierrez, and got trounced by Magnussen last year. Meanwhile Hulkenberg beat Sainz Jr. Bit of a difference eh.

and Grosjean had another stellar race weekend i see, while Hulkenberg outperformed Ricciardo for a solid points finish in that mediocre Renault...

80% of F1 performance is down to the car, 20% the driver according to N.Rosberg.

"Hulk was looking for 4 mill pa, DR is on 25 mill pa." - if that's true, then Hulkenberg represents exceptional value-for-money given that he's now on 33 points and Ricciardo is on 34 points...

That is not the mark of an average F1 driver, that's the mark of a top-10 F1 driver. Maybe not elite, but very good indeed. And yes, better than Bottas who I could never see being within 1 point of Ricciardo in the same team.

Do you rate Grosjean as a better driver than Hulkenberg?

I think Groesjean is faster, Hulkenberg more reliable.

It looks like teams rate faster, but a little careless over steady and reliable. Especially if fast and careless also has a talent for car development.

TBF as much as he comes across as a bit of a nob, he is respected in the F1 community, he knows alot of people and has got a fair few "predictions" correct in the past.

I always predicted that if this happened it’d signal the first step towards the door for the works Mercedes race team.

If Merc win WCC as a team in 2020, I'd agree. Focus on FE as a team and keep selling the PUs to McL, Williams & whatever silly name the pink things have then.

Merc are confirmed till 2025.

The new team (French management) will be supplied by Renault.

(I’m sure we called the move back in June/July, I’ll have to have a look at the early pages).

We’ve got McMerc back!

Need to look at the macro issues as well. Germany is in or about to be in a recession. Auto is a primary industry that has been slow to move to electrification. The diesel scandal still hangs over them.

Having a position of veni, vidi, vici for F1 and then stepping back to be PU suppliers through the recession may be one they take.
