Does anyone remember Murray in the 70s banging on about one of the drivers tooling around at the back being a rock drummer?
As usual with MW it was always short on detail but a pay driver I guess.

I think there's a huge element of jealousy against Stroll. He seems like quite a likeable character and has even said himself that he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. You don't get a podium purely on luck. I'd laugh if he starts outperforming Perez on merit alone. The gap isn't as big as some try to make out.

Think there’s a lot of truth in that. Take away people’s knowledge about daddy’s money and we’d just think he was a young kid trying to make it in F1....

....doesn’t change the fact that he’s not the most talented on the grid though, but he’s also not the worst

Then the conspiracy theorists would just claim that Perez was being hobbled in favour of Lance. Most people have already made up their minds and will always come up with an excuse.

You can certainly get 1, maybe 2 podiums on luck, just like you can occasionally get a pole on luck like Hulk did almost 10 years ago.

If these events weren’t just lucky, why haven’t they been repeated?

Because he hasn't been in a car capable of it since?

Maybe, but luck alone is not enough. Luck might present the opportunities, but the driver still has to be able to take advantage of the opportunity. How many lucky results can one driver have before you start to attribute it to something else than pure luck?

Obviously .. . I'm confident I'd been up there myself more than once if the cards had fallen differently.

seeing him sat on that chair with his little pink shoes on was punishment enough for him.
He will probably have a good race due to the lack of running for everyone.

Does anyone find his steering input jerky when they show POV? Looks borderline erratic.

Stroll's an inconsistent driver. When he's good he can be really good. Spain and Italy last year spring to mind. Unfortunately his peaks are few and far between and certainly should have got GP2 experience.

Hmm. This just popped up on my Instagram. If proof were needed he's not quick, over half a second slower and six places behind his team mate in the same machinery...

Similar gap in Q1, hence Stroll 16th and out and Perez 5th by the end of Q3, eventually posting a lap a whole second quicker.

Lets not forget that he's in a completely new car in a completely new team this year. Other drivers have struggled with the shift in the past and others still do today. Gasly for example really cant seem to find the pace in his new Red Bull.

Yes there is that, and Ric in the Renault in the main.

But Lance also shows poor judgement at times i.e. yesterday. Then again if we were feeling generous we would Leclerc, Vettel and Kubica all hit the wall and they are all (IMHO) miles better than Stroll will ever be.

I have been trying to keep an open mind on this topic.

However, I now feel that his gap to Perez seems to be just too great. I only think of Perez as being a very consistent journeyman driver - and never likely to win a WDC.

Stroll is as familiar with the Mercedes PU as LeClerc is with the Ferrari and has one more year’s experience. I had thought that he had just come to the wrong team, too early, but now he looks like a very average pay driver.

Seeing Ocon in the pits still grates a lot and now Bottas is fully competitive, it looks like he will be looking for a tier-2 seat for next year. But you would not want to inflict a Williams drive on him, and you can bet that Russell will be wanting something better next year as well.

Managed to get it in the points today with only the McLarens between him and Perez.

I’m not a huge fan of Perez as I think he’s a bit to hot headed but I accept that when he’s on form he’s bloody quick, a tough team mate for Stroll to have!

I think once he’s got his head around the car and settled into the team he’ll be there or thereabouts, possibly even beating Perez on tracks that suit him.

Let’s also not forget that he’s still very young and essentially fast passed his way into F1 due to his fathers money. He’s still learning and having to learn the hard way having jumped up too soon but the talent is there.
