May be a ploy by Mercedes. Force Ferrari to turn their new engine up to either see what their pace really is or to force a reliability issue.
Possibly. But I suspect Merc are in a position where they execute their plan, their plan only and don't worry about others. They have that luxury, no-one else does, really.

I don't think Ferrari have been using their new engine today.

For the race. Don't think that means they used them in practice? Seem to remember on the live practice text it being said they were using the 'old' engines today.

Ferrari corrected that statement during second practice and confirmed that both cars had the new engine.

It's all About midfield now, and battle of the Mercedes drivers.

I was quite surprised to see them 3/10ths up on Ferrari in FP2. That's the sort of pace Vs Ferrari that Mercedes don't normally show until quali. Which means, they probably have extra in hand tomorrow. If that's the case then it's a true hammer blow to Ferrari.

Odds on another 1-2?
It's not going to be a popular view but I now want to see Mercedes get 1-2 in all 21 races. It would be a truly majestic achievement & let's face it just getting the WCC & WDC this year is proving a bit banal now.

The gentleman’s etiquette of Baku will disappear long before you see a season of 1-2s imho.

HAM is one of the fairest drivers on the track but he’s not afraid to get his elbows out should the need arise.

BOT on the other hand, I suspect will start to play dirty if things continue to be this close for much longer.

oh, fair play. Only saw the live text today so missed that bit.

Guess we won't know how potent it is till they turn the wick up tomorrow.

If Mercedes are being as conservative today as they normally are on a Friday it doesn't look good for Ferrari.

Agreed. If Bottas is still up there after the British GP I think he’ll be thinking this may be his only and best chance a la Rosberg.

I totally get where you're coming from. If we must have an all dominant team, and the season is a foregone conclusion, let's do it in style!!!

I think an entire season of 1-2's is a tad optimistic, but there will surely be more Mercedes 1-2's, and I'd think it's fairly likely that no other team will get a 1-2 at all in 2019.

As for Ferrari, they totally have the new PU and I suspect the biggest part of their new power advantage, is in fact the larger space under the fin, allowing better cooling so they could turn up the power. The fact Mercedes walked it today must be crushing. And please, no talk of Ferrari 'hiding' their true pace. They get one chance to run quali Sims and FP2 was it. And they were bloody fast! Just Mercedes were faster still.

How is P3 equivalent to quali conditions? The track will be far cooler, P2 is the closest conditions they will see to quali.

The fact the weather is stable both days makes that truer than ever.

I wouldn't make any predictions at all on a Friday. I do think Ferrari kept its powder dry today.

Extra sets of intermediates have been authorised by the FIA for P3.. I’ve checked the weather and it does not look wet...

I’m not sure what you mean. P3 weather will be very similar to qualifying weather as it usually is, being on the same day, a couple of hours apart.

Tomorrow it’s predicted to be 19c and cloudy for both sessions.

Last year at Barcelona the leaders were a second or more faster in P3 than P2.

According to the forecast, P2 was closest to quali. And the time of day plays a huge factor as it takes the track time each day to warm up.

It's inevitable a few teams will find a little extra tomorrow based on extra data and time to adjust setup, but I doubt very much Ferrari will find 3/10's vs whatever Mercedes dig up.

And Mercedes almost certainly have an extra few % power to unleash if Ferrari do show any signs of catching up.

It's prediction time now guys, I think Mercedes P1. Probably also P2. A certain CLC could take advantage if both Merc drivers push so hard to outdo one another, that one falters.
