Niki Lauda passes away
Discussion
I’m across in Germany at the moment and a guy has just run into the hotel bar I’m in to say Nikki Lauda has passed away. Very sad news. He was an ever-present force in Formula 1 and showed commitment beyond comparison with anyone in the modern era.
It’s a sad day but his service to F1 will be recognised for years to come.
RIP Nikki.

Gutted, but half expected. He had a very serious condition which would have left him open to all sorts of complications.
The fact that he survived his grave 1976 injuries almost gave the impression that he would shrug this off too, but sadly it seems he was older and possibly less fit / resilient than those days.
Still gutted though, I had great respect for the man. Just raised a glass to him as I was quite honestly startled away from working late by the 2am breaking news on the radio. Thanks for being straightforward. RIP Niki.

He even made it into snoopy cartoons (well in Viz)

I saw Niki race in F3 , F2 and F1 , saw him win the British GP and was at Zandvoort for his last GP win. He was the closet to a hero I've ever had- the smartest and bravest of all , in my book . I don't normally get upset when a driver dies but last time I felt like this was over 40 years ago. Damn .
Very sad news to wake up to
Certainly a life to be celebrated, and it will be. The mood at Monaco is going to strange no doubt, but I'm sure the guys will all know he would expect to see them focus on the race.
People often say there is more to celebrate than be sad about, and I think with Niki that's more true than ever. Passing away now, is a reminder of the extra life he fought for after the accident, and how well he made use of all those extra years, and became a huge inspiration.
RIP Niki.

Always seemed like a true gentleman with passion and ultimate determination, strength and dedication to the sport he loved. F1 is very much poorer without him. His straight talking style and smile in interviews will be sorely missed.
A true legend when the word is too readily used these day.
RIP Niki.
