That was never ever going to happen. I can't believe people even discussed it.
Agree, it always seemed a bit far fetched. There's no way he would've re-signed for AM if there were a RBR seat available though, so this should put that rumour to bed.

That's incredibly unlikely. The AM isn't as fast as the Mercedes, and Alonso will know as well as the rest of us do that he'd be more likely to win races in a Merc.

It's a shame for the sport that he's staying with Aston. He's still putting in world class performances and the desire is obviously there, it would've been fun to see him in a car capable of fighting for wins.

Well Alonso will be 60 years old in 2041 so I can imagine him still racing around in NASCAR laugh

Indycar surely? How old was Mario Andretti when he stopped racing?

Edit - 54 when he stopped single seaters, 60 when he stopped doing LeMans.

The funny thing is, that it’s not impossible to imagine him retiring from F1 to go race Indycar full time for a few seasons.

Brundle was doing endurance races with his son only a couple of years ago, at more than 60 as well.

Cup level? Drivers retire earlier now than racing into their middle ages because they're kids when they begin racing at the top level.

I can't see how Merc would give him any more chance of competing for *wins*. Right now, Alonso is feeding the myth of Alonso, delivering crushing blows to his team mate (who, let's not forget, had a pretty decent junior career - Lance is no slouch), pushing the underdogs up the leaderboard. If he can do that, receive the plaudits, and earn a higher paycheck for doing so, that would seem a pretty good result if no winning seats are available.

Right now I'd put money on Alonso being more likely to win with Aston than with Merc, TBH. The only seats worth having are those at Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari if you want to win.

That was Mansell Snr at Le Mans when racing with his sons Greg and Leo.

Indeed it was:

To drag back on topic, the next Youtube hit for “Nigel Mansell Crash’, was this one in a demonstration race for two-seater F1 cars at Donington in 2001. A certain young Spaniard lifted off at the apex of the final corner, and Our Nige went straight into the back of him and over the top. With passengers in the cars.

(Right, back to watching the Goodwood MM).

Yes you are right, better memory than me.
I was running a car at leman that year, so had other things to worry about.
On a side note, you never really hear about the 2 mansell sons now, remember one at least was looking quite good.

I meant right now in terms of picking a future drive. RB are unassailable this year. But for 2025 & 2026? Ferrari, Aston and McLaren seem to me to have better prospects than Mercedes.

Mercedes’ problem is their hybrid engine was so good, and their home advantage was equally great. Recall how fast the Williams was when first fitted with it. Mercedes did a competent job of development, but we’re they truly top drawer with their aero? I’m not so sure. They had some smart chassis people, whose wings were truly clippped by regulation changes.

I struggle to believe Mercedes have the necessary strength in depth in their aero department right now.

There’s only been four race weekends, it’s far too soon to say that Mercedes won’t finish ahead of Aston, McLaren, won’t be bothering Ferrari etc

Rumours abound that Lawrence is doing everything he can to poach Newey from Red Bull.

Imagine Alonso in a Newey car, if Honda can deliver the goods then it could finally be World Championship number 3 for Alonso, I don't think many would say he doesn't deserve one based on talent.

They had to hack parts off for the 2021 season to slow the MB down, so I would say that the aero was reasonable, but I am no expert.

Mercedes have been quite open about their shortcomings. Their simulations don’t match what they find in real world, they don’t know why that is.

Until they figure it out they’re lost, if they can figure it out.

Fernando Alonso has signed a new multi year deal with Aston Martin for 2025/2026.
Hopefully, he’ll open an Aston dealership in his hometown, Oviedo, to serve northern Spain.
