Wow, I wouldn't have thought there was such a big difference. F1 fans are an oppressed minority !
Quite a lot of multiscreening going on.

F1 is my favourite sport, but I had the cricket, wimbledon and a hooky stream for F1 running (yes, I forgot it was on C4...)

I've got nothing to let go! Are you even reading what i'm saying?

I'm completely agreeing with you that he'd likely have won anyway, just that the safety car played into his hands massively and sealed the win for him earlier and more easily.
Psst you're not allowed to even hint at a anything not 100% positive about Lewis around here without someone getting their panties bunched.
It’s evens on that score from both sides but I’d do believe in giving credit where credit is due no matter who the driver is. I don’t have a particular favourite driver, I just want to see decent races.

The only shame was that you couldn't watch all 3 simultaneously!
I gave it a good go although it was difficult with the cricket and tennis culminating at exactly the same time.

Featureless monotonous flat airfield circuit + Mercedes 1-2 borefest = usually falling aleep for the entire race ...

. so I wasn't going to watch it. But so many people on here were saying how good it was, so in the end I relented. Glad I did, there were some excellent battles all the way down the field. And for once I agreed with the stewards' decision re the Vettel/Verstappen collision.

Yep, not a bad race, despite the result.

Solid performance from Bottas, unlucky re: safety car.

Solid performance from Max. Must've been more fun without power assisted steering for remainder of race biggrin

An excellent race won by an all-time great, who is getting greater.

It wasn't predictable though. Grid P2 Hamilton drove a fantastic race and would have won without the safety car. Excellent write up by Mark Hughes on the Motorsport magazine website, should you wish to educate yourself.

My thoughts on a great race;

  • Kudos to Mercedes for putting on a show. Make no mistake, if that were Ferrari or Red Bull running 1 & 2 with the faster, higher championship position driver behind, they would have simply reversed the positions. Red Bull did reverse their positions during the race. Mercedes, Hamilton and Bottas treated us to a rarefied 16 lap epic battle. Pats on the back all ‘round.
  • Bottas was unlucky with the timing of the safety car but Hamilton was going to get him one way or another. His pace advantage was obvious. To push Bottas that hard for the first stint, in dirty air throughout, and still keep his tyres in better condition than Bottas showed his clear superiority on Sunday. The fastest lap on old hard tyres rammed it home- however people seem to have overlooked the fact that Bottas’ soft tyres were used, and I don’t know how used they were.
  • I don’t need to say how good the Leclerc Verstappen battle was. Verstappen has proven himself, and yesterday he thoroughly tested Leclerc and found him to be every bit the instinctive, hard but fair racer.
  • Verstappen is an animal. Most drivers would never have made I out of the gravel trap. Even if they did they probably would’ve been straight in the pits or trailing around slowly due to the damage to the car. Max is straight on it, out of the gravel and back on the pace for the remainder of the race. With no power steering and a broken seat. Animal.
  • By contrast, Vettel’s inlap after the crash was so slow and half-arsed that it almost looked like some kind of dirty protest. Unless the team told him to go at half pace in case the front wing detached I find that deeply disappointing. The wing did not even look visually damaged during the inlap or in the pits when it was changed. I understand that it certainly would’ve been damaged, but neither of the pylons looked broken and it wasn’t moving around or scraping on the ground. Vettel was driving as though the race was over. I’m beginning to think that maybe Vettel’s ‘race’ is over.
  • We should’ve had a great Norris vs. Ricciardo battle, and I think Norris would’ve had 6th in the bag. The way he passed Ricciardo on the first lap was convincing. Even without the safety car, I have no doubt that Sainz would have been in the points too, probably 8th.
  • Would’ve loved to have seen what was going on between Hulkenberg, the Alfa Romeos and the Toro Rossos, it looked exciting judging by the gaps but none of it was shown during the coverage.

Stop going on about Hamilton being lucky. There was some luck with the safety car but Bottas needed two stops and Hamilton only required one stop amongst many other things, so to suggest that Hamilton would not have won without the safety car, is utter b*llocks.
I've not suggested Hamilton wouldn't have won without the safety car at all, he probably would have done as like I said, he has incredible race craft. I'm simply saying that the safety car made it an easier win for him, which it did, he won a race having not been on pole without having to overtake anyone on track!
He’s won a huge number of races without being on pole. Irrelevant.

He would have likely won easily yesterday without the safety car with Bottas needing to make a second stop.

And with that in mind, Bottas second stop would have been much harder without his ‘luck’ of Vettel and Verstappen coming together.

Just let it go.
I haven’t seen any evidence that Bottas ‘needed’ an extra stop. He certainly took an extra one, necessitated by fitting the same Medium at his first stop.

A tactical error, for Bottas at least, as they’ve now admitted, or perhaps splitting strategy. Whatever, it certainly benefitted Hamilton as did the S/C. I’m sure pitting Bottas first helped them decide how long to leave Hamilton out, too.
Bottas was on a two stop strategy. What evidence do you want?

Funny watching the Cricket world cup at the after party.

Lewis came on stage right during the super over and no-one was interested - everyone looking at the ICC broadcast, not the stage.

Lewis was asked if he's a cricket fan. He said yes. Liar. Why weren't you watching as well then?

Nail on head. I imagine his scheduled appearance was arranged quite far in advance.

Yes - he just had a home F1 GP to knock out before he could get away. hehe

No offence to any cricket fans but it really wound me up hearing people booing when they turned the cricket off on one of the big screens when Lewis was coming on stage. After all, thousands of us stayed back to see him and hear what he had to say after his record victory and battle with VB. It looked to me like his appearance was cut short by what is a meaningless game of rounders (to me, I'm not a fan of cricket and didn't even realise there was a world Cup on).

What exactly did Christian Horner say about Vettel and the next gp in Germany?

Enjoyed the GP.

No idea who won the tennis, and if I hadn't read some of the previous comments in this thread, I'd have had no idea who won the cricket either.

Should they ban pit stops during the safety car to make it fairer?

Best thing about yesterday was the glimpse into the future when Max and Charles are battling away for world championships once Lewis and Seb have hung up their gloves.

Easy. With so many people in the area, it wasnt like you could get internet signal.

was relaxing back at the campsite after getting back from the podium. Heard various cheers echoing around and wondered what it was.
