Formula 1 Pre-season Testing February 2020
Discussion
I actually thought that the SKY program at 5pm was quite good. Informative, given that they do not really know very much detail.
But Jeez Natalie Pinkerton needs to learn how to phrase a succinct question. Her long winded one to Ted was an absolute classic. Asked sort of a question, then went on to speculate what his answer could be, then forgot where she was - leaving poor Ted utterly bewildered.
On the other hand the new woman (Rosie?) did a much better job with VB - apart from the “how does it feel to go down and then up through those corners”

She's not new, Rosanna Tennant is one of the official F1.com/TV reporters. By the sounds of things (Verstappen watching Jakes and Crofty in the box on the screen) the Sky coverage was being used by F1.TV so they were all on, Rosanna, Croft, Alex Jakes (F2 commentator) and the rest.CustardOnChips said:
I know it's only day 1. But, Mercedes look like they might be miles ahead of Ferrari and Redbull.
Too early to say I think, and no way did Ferrari try to do anything impressive today - for whatever reason. Red bull pushed a little I thought but then seemed to back off. The teams are so good at analysing the data these days I get the impression they only have to push so far so work out how much more the car has to give.Friday should see more realistic comparison and tumbling lap times.

Same was said about Ferrari after day 1 last year One is renowned for chasing headline laptimes in testing
The other for plodding round at a reasonable pace on mediums.
Mercedes set their fastest lap today on harder tyres than the others were using.
I said at the summer break last season I believed Mercedes having such a lead that they would be able to throw more resources at developing the 2020 car earlier. And they would be significantly faster this year.
They will be desperate to win a 7th constructors title and get Lewis his 7th World championship. As it will make them the undisputed greatest F1 team of all time.
Have you seen the look on Toto's face in his interviews this afternoon? He knows they have absolutely nailed it.

Indeed it was. But Mercedes aren't Ferrari.

I think so. As for what Toto knows... He now has a Racing Point W10 on track for direct comparison One is renowned for chasing headline laptimes in testing

Who knows just how in cahoots him and stroll are. Rumours about them both looking at the same investments - and we know they both invested in Williams at one time, their investment desires seem in the habit of aligning. And now this incredibly close collaboration which has essentially gifted stroll the car that won the championship last year? Yet to learn what Toto gets in return but we can be certain it's something.

Just watched that. Clever if it works and does seem to. And if it does, almost impossible for the other teams to replicate until well into mid-season as that's a major bit of engineering.https://twitter.com/SkySportsF1/status/12302054097...
Everyone's gone 'evolution' apart from Mercedes who seem to have included revolution as well.

I knew they'd throw everything at this year to secure the seventh and record breaking double.. Even then, I wasn't expecting a new concept with such potential impact to be found this late on in the current era. To be truthful, I was starting to think that such radical innovation was next to impossible in modern regs heavy F1 in general.
Not much can be known just yet about how impactful this design will be, but in principal it's taking air that used to crash into the rear wheel and cause drag, and use that same energy to instead increase GE and aero downforce. Assuming it does work, that's a potent exchange indeed.
