DAS is expected to provide more even heating across the tyre.
Testing it on pit exit today, could help to get the tyre in the window quicker..

Unscheduled Vettel press conference at 3pm today.
Any news on this?
There is no news as such. Ted is repeating the highlight quotes on Sky now and in summary they were just talking about their approach to testing this year and suggesting they could go quite a bit faster than they have - which I'm sure we all assumed in any case.
Cheers.

So what am I supposed to do with the 50,000 "Sebastian Vettel Retirement Tour 2020" t-shirts I made this morning?

Throw them in the bin with the "Sebastian Vettel World Champion 2020" t-shirts.

Well, it was bound to happen, Ferrari have formally asked the FIA for clarification that DAS is legal.

Or depending on your point of view, Ferrari have decided it's illegal, and asked the FIA to ratify that position.

How does the collective think this ruling will go?

Personally, everything I've read and seen so far leads me to believe it's entirely within the rules. BUT as this is the FIA, and as it's Ferrari doing the asking, I suspect the chance of it being outlawed is >50%

Ferrari thought of it first but didn't use it, says Ferrari because of course they did hehe

Unless Ferrari produce documentation proving they thought of it first, I’m calling massive chinny!

You know you really don't need a forensic team to get to the bottom of this. If you guys were the inventors of Faceb DAS, you'd have invented DAS

Well, gotta say today's session was a bit dull compared to last week. Only highlights seem to be that Williams keep having issues and HAAS don't seem to have shown a glimmer of performance so far - which who knows, might be good news for Williams this season..

A day of nothing remotely conclusive or even suggestive really. Tomorrow and Friday will no doubt get a bit more interesting smile

Good to see Kubica showing some great times in the Alfa after a year stuck in a dog of a Williams there he is showing what he can really do.
I heard he said something like it was easier to take a second off a lap time in that car than 0.1 of a second a lap in the Williams.

I guarantee they did and so probably did most of the others. You honestly think that the brains that are in the main teams would never have considered it? The clever thing Mercedes have done is to convince the FIA (so far) that it doesn't affect the suspension in any way.

I think the clever thing is realising that it's (a) within the rules and (b) viable from a safety and packaging perspective. Given that the other teams are saying it would take half a season to duplicate the system, it's clearly not as simple as it appears at first glance.

There's still plenty of time for them to be useful.

The Retirement shirts I mean.

Both equal pretty much, given that normally one takes away from the other. Track dependant too of course.

Throw in the ability for the driver to directly influence tyre temperature and/or to a degree, wear.. I think this could be very useful in several ways at pretty much every race.

A possible fifth benefit - could they run max toe out on the straights whilst behind a safety car/VSC to keep the tyres switched on whilst the field behind loses temperature?
The influence of toe on tyre bulk temperature on the straights is relatively small. If you consider the camber angle then the contact patch is quite small in a straight line. The single biggest influence, by a long, long way, is the brake temperature and how that's ducted through the rims. At the front, where there's still a conventional hydraulic braking system, the ducting is critical.

Reducing scrubbing on the straights is obviously good for reducing the wear which, in turn, helps to retain bulk temperature in the shoulder area. That will be the most beneficial aspect.

Under the SC the front toe will have zero influence. Again it comes back to the usage of the brakes, which is the single most important aspect of gaining both carcass and bulk temperature.
