This is why nonsense about 'so and so could do what Lewis could do with the right car' is just nonsense. His career is littered with examples of what we've just seen - driving that would be unreasonable to expect from anyone.

I was impressed by max. Very impressed. Then Lewis stretches out over a second faster.. and with a track that's wetter than it was the rest of qualifying.
Spot on. I have been watching F1 since the mid 80s, and Sir Lewis is just head and shoulders above anyone else.

Well that turned into quite the session, thankfully they managed to find a gap in the worst of the weather.

But wow Lewis, 1.2s faster than anyone else, that was some effort in the conditions. Class of his own. Reminded me of a certain Brazillian qualifying at Monaco 32 years ago.

Wow, what a superb drive from Lewis. Max was wringing every last bit of of that redbull though so fair play to him.

Sir Lewis 1.2s clear of the field on one of the shortest laps of the year GOAT.
Reminds me Monza a few years ago when he obliterated everybody during wet qualification by more than a second as well I think.

This is very special.

That was something special - old man looking to chalk up some records before retiring, eh?

Although post qual interviews - you think the resources of formula 1 could find someone that didnt have a 9000db compressor going to interview its stars...
I thought that too, what a daft place for the interview

For tomorrow, this could give Lewis an early opportunity to make up his points deficit to Bottas. Depending on whether max can hold Bottas off.

I suppose there is quite some pressure to make up that deficit - the mercs are so far ahead in race terms that, barring incident or misfortune, on paper they can only expect to fight one another for the win at each race.

Just watching the post quali analysis and they showed LH lap side by side with MV lap.

So they were neck to neck all the way to turn 4/5 (the infield section). Max doesn't do as good a job avoiding the river puddles while Lewis takes a different line which gains him 0.6 secs in the next three turns.

Brilliant race craft from Lewis, all the teams will be studying that race line if we have a wet race tomorrow.

That's a very niche theme park.

Now for the F2 feature race, this should be a good one - if they can all behave themselves like the F1 drivers.

Edit: first oops to Artem Markelov, binned it on the way round from the pits to the grid and won’t start.

Can’t wait to see what the F1 Sucks thread has to say about that. They were driving so slowly and falling off the track from time-to-time.

As they kept on saying Cream rises - utterly brilliant performance from Lewis. 10 years ago he would have been flat out from the pit lane like Max, but now he steadily plots where the grip is at every point of the circuit and does 3-purple sectors to the cross the line at the flag.

What a fantastic session, great respect for all of them.

Lewis, almost beyond belief. I've seen pretty much every race since 1978 and I think he's the best driver I've ever seen.

That drive for McLaren at a very wet Silverstone still sticks out in my mind.

Ok handful of laps behind the safety car then red flag back to the pits.

Farce. If they don't let the cars go, they can't dry the track! Waste of time running them round endlessly until their tyres are stone cold and then asking how they feel about racing..

Just start the race and judge after lap two if it's feasible!

F2 doesn't use tyre warmers anyway, so the tyres are already stone cold ..

I know but my point is they need to go to build some heat and start to dry the track. SC is too slow to allow either to happen.
