Cheers..for some reason, it's taken me a lot longer to spot the even larger/weirder ones McLaren are running.

Lewis just matched last year's time and I reckon could find plenty more, easily.
Given he did a 1:03.2 in qualifying, I rather suspect he could have done last year too if he'd wanted to, too.

I guess they had an awful lot more information on the car by the time they got here last year, mind.
That's exactly why it is relevant. It's confirmation that the car is behaving and and on point right from the very start of the season. Its an indicator of all being well and a solid opening session indeed.

It'll be interesting to see if Ferrari can get anywhere near their pole time from last year; whether their car has gone backwards only in relative terms or in absolute terms as well.

It's difficult to judge whether the brand new cars arriving in Australia in a typical season are faster or slower than the same team's car from the end of the previous season. On one hand they will clearly have made improvements to the fundemental package, on the other the previous year's car has had an entire year of fettling by that point.

Nobody want to mention Williams so far?

Not at the bottom, and half a second off the Alfas.

Better than most expected and some of the doomsayers wanted to see.

Well in that session they were slower than last year, despite the cooler temps too. Not conclusive I know, but interesting nonetheless.

There or there abouts with Alpha and Alfa, though.

Only half a second behind Ferrari, too. hehe

Williams were on Softs, Alfa Mediums, there looks like (roughly) a 1.5 delta between the compounds, this afternoons race sims will confirm the pace difference.

Ah OK. I missed that. Less encouraging then.

ETA: Latifi appears to have been on Mediums, half a second off the back of the pack then?

Ill have a look, I was watching tv, and they don't show the tyre compounds that often, 5 mins!

Racing point set their fastest times on the hards with both cars. They certainly look quick.

They mentioned in the Sky commentary that they were thermal cameras monitoring the tyre temps.

Yep. And yes will wait see... Doesn't look promising though.

Although relative to Ferrari, its progress at least!

I thought Williams had been pretty candid about the fact they still expect to be the slowest team and that they'll consider the season a success if they're close enough to at least be at the back of the midfield rather than in a back-field of their own.

I suspect there's mid-field drivers who Russell will beat as often as not if his car is within 2 tens of them rather than the 2 seconds it was off last year.

Liking the 18" wheel / tyre combo in F2.

Bodes well for better-looking F1 cars next year.
