He might be the most well known driver, but that doesn't equal the most popular.

Clarkson says stuff to get a reaction. It's a bit sad seeing some of the anti-Hamilton regulars here clinging to this sort of thing.

It's likely that Max will win the title this year, wait for that and you'll get to be all happy for the off-season.

But I think the younger guys will come through, and Lando is great. I'm not sure any of the current crop will ever have the profile LH has outside of the sport. Could be wrong.

Point is: Clarkson is pandering to a certain audience and if we go with Hamilton being the third most popular driver on the grid. That still doesn't sit well with Clarkson's blah.
How are you measuring "the world". Insta peddling ?

Clarkson and Gervais are both old school but remain funnier than most.

Spitting Image and HIGNFY aren't too bad either for old school formats.

New doesn't automatically equate to better.

Look at the new fishing quotas biggrin
Gervais is funny IMO. Agree with you on that. And right on a lot of issues, also IMO. But Clarkson? He's only ever pandered to his own audience. Never strays far.

Also, HIGNFY. Brilliant. About the only time I thought Boris was half decent at something!

How do you know that about Clarkson? He's been critical of him before, but not for his driving skills.

Personally, I think he is the greatest driver out there (ok, Max is also up there now), one would be crazy to deny his skills. He is in my top 5 along with Senna, MSC, Clark and Fangio, without any order.

But I do not like his personality outside the track (and one doesn't have to really, I watch F1 for the driving, not taking any of these guys out for a beer), so what does that make me? A hater? Or an anti? Of course not, that would be daft. I only judge his driving when talking about him in the F1 frame.

And I think this is the difference. People cannot distinguish between the 2. Fanboys find everything great, haters just hate him all the same. I guess I am an anomaly, maybe smile

They're both exponents of satire, albeit with different styles.
Boris and Forsyth were at their best on HIGNFY.
Anyone rich and famous is fair game for satire including Ham

May I ask who are you referring to? It is difficult to know if you don't quote them.

Referring to you;
There was a post to the effect that the Clarkson's comment would be fuel for the Hamilton 'haters'.
You profess to be neutral - so why comment like it was any criticism of you?

I've assumed that as a neutral then the particularly extreme inputs one way or another are an irritation (however minor) to him, seeing as they tend to drown out any reasoned conversation and generally drag the whole thing into a petulant mess of vitriolic bile.

So possibly the likelihood that an article would incite another round of the two extremes shouting at each other was deemed worthwhile of whistful comment.

Thanks, it wasn't clear that you were talking to me.

Set me off? Good grief, I couldn't care less on what someone wrote somewhere. Please, read my post again, replying to someone on a forum is not being set off; it is called a discussion.

I was just wondering why do people find Clarkson's post inflammatory, if I have to explain myself; he hasn't changed his position on Hamilton, he has always been critical of his off track manners. Haters going to hate, that was the gist of my post, to make it clear. And equally, fanboys will be fanboys. Nothing more.

On the contrary, I find it amusing. Just as people say that this is fuel to the "haters", I find that equally the fanboys would run to defend Hamilton. I do not care either way if I'm honest.

Clarkson not liking Hamilton's woke stance does nothing to change my view of Hamilton being the most brilliant racer of his time.

I find it mildly amusing that Clarkson reaches for the bash Hamilton pen, whenever he runs out of other ideas - then whines on about how childish Hamilton is. This from the whiny old f4rt who's tagline is "how hard can it be?" whilst proving he can barely tie his own shoelaces unaided, & punched someone because his dinner was running late...

Maybe, but that doesn't explain Norris.

His self-deprecating humour must be popular.
Lando's also attracting a different type of fan - mainly younger gamers (far more female fans than most other drivers have too). That's surely good for the future of the sport.

In terms of social media following, Hamilton has more followers than the next 6 drivers combined. I doubt they're all following him just to mock his dress sense.

I thought this was an exaggeration, but according to this, it is so true!

From April, but it shows that Hamilton has 33m followers, while Alonso has 8m in second place... Impressive stuff from Hamilton!

Indeed - But Boris probably has more followers than the next 6 MPs combined. That doesn't make him the most popular laugh And judging by this thread, I wouldn't be surprised if people follow him just to moan about his clothing.

It might sound like I'm bashing Lewis, but F1 needs a big superstar driver like him. The more eyes on the sport from whoever's social media can only be a good thing.

biggrin no, not really, no more than any other over-grown school boy with an inflated opinion of himself wink . I used to read him avidly in the old days, less so now because I don't tend to read where he writes. It dawned on me fairly early on that he tends more to style than substance. I'd probably be more of a James May fan, if such a distasteful thing were to exist.

Thankfully the vast majority of people are at neither extreme ends of that particular spectrum.
