The problem with Croft is that he makes an exciting and unpredictable race such as yesterday's unwatchable with the sound up as he screeches every word of which there are far too many. If he watched and listened before shouting it would be much more enjoyable.

When I switched the volume back up after the R5L broadcast finished, just as the pre-podium interviews were about to start, Croft sounded exhausted and a little hoarse, as if he'd just competed in a two hour shouting contest.

I think Ben Edwards was totally over the top yesterday as well. He gets so excited sometimes that his voice cracks, like a 13-year old. It's just so bloody unnecessary.

The over the top thing is more than anything, directors, Edwards never used to do it, and Brundle did not either but both do it now, Edwards to excess almost as if he is told to, it's absolutely pathetic to listen to really.

Yes Murry did it, but he didn't shout, he was clearly doing it out of passion and enthusiasm, this is very different and seems and is forced.

it is very poor, but what choice do you really have. The new guy at 4 will do exactly the same as his director will make him.

There was a time when Ben was superb, that changed when he got the F1 gig, he went all Croft. He sounds totally worn out now.
I agree. He is clearly WAY more clued up about racing than Croft, and when he is calm, he is still really good. It's just the hysteria, it completely ruins it.

Maybe that's why he's stopping after this season.

Anyway, I can't imagine Croft ever saying something like "I've got to stop because I've got a lump in my throat."

So some thoughts on the subject.

Sports with shouty commentators:
Football
Rugby

Sports with calm commentators:
Tennis
Golf

The above works because it sounds natural and matches what’s happening on screen. Crofty sounds forced as mentioned above.

Motorsport spectators in real life are generally quite calm from my experience, though maybe that’s because I generally visit club type events. My only GP was Silverstone 2001, and I was a little (though happily) surprised by the roar that went round the circuit when Hakkinen past Schumacher. To sound genuine, does the commentary need to match what you would expect from the spectators. Murray would always burst with excitement at the race start, but that fits. He was also genuinely excited by the start of a race.

Football commentators also only shout when it’s natural: a goal, a surprise win, a great save. They wouldn’t shout “And Chelsea Win!!!” at the top of the voice when the final whistle is blown following a game that Chelsea had dominated from the beginning against someone in the relegation zone.

I suppose the counterpoint to all this, is that to attract new types of spectators, you need a new product, including commentary.

Possibly my favourite GP moment of all time!

Is this part of the problem, the legacy of Murray?

Do sports producers come in from other sports (they can't all be F1 fans when they start), catch up on the history of the sport through archive reels and think 'Wow, that was exciting, we need to put some "passion and excitement" into the production'?

Legard just went the other way, perhaps not to try and replicate Murray?

There should be a public commentary and a nerds commentary. On the nerds commentary they would be free to say nothing for long periods, admit when the racing is crap and assume that the audience might have seen a few GPs in their life.

I remember when James Hunt was with Murray Walker; he used to say nothing for lap after lap, hehe but when he did chip in it was always informative.

I thought that was because, as explained by Murray years later, James used to nip out for a cigarette or something wink and then drift back in when he was finished.

Slightly off tack, but relevant. I watched the race on live timing on Sunday as I was stuck on a hospital bed.

I looked at the cost of F1 TV Pro, it is currently shown at €64:99 in France. Does anyone know if - - that is because it is the end of the season.
- It’s a reduced price for the 1st year?
- I am likely to get a French soundtrack?
- Or, even worse, I will get the Croft / Brundle soundtrack?
- Will I also be able to see races when I am in the U.K. and Spain?

Thanks

I think they try and prevent you from registering. My brother got someone in Portugal to buy it for him. We both use it here in uk and it works.

I don't have major issue with Croft or Brundle doing the commentary. What I do have a major issue with is the amount of mistakes that they make which confuses things. Sometimes it takes them quite a while to realise and just results in major eye rolling while watching the race.

I think they need some younger sharper people, that can actually distinguish Bono's voice telling George he has a puncture rather than mistaking it for Valterri's engineer who has a totally different voice. So many mistakes like this recently when they are commentating and say something is happening to one car when it is actually happening to the other car on the team.

That was really bad. You don’t need to recognise the engineers voice; it comes up on the screen whose radio it is.

In fairness channel 4 made exactly the same mistake

I watched C4 yesterday and it also took them an eternity to realise that Valteri had not actually changed tyres.

On the F1 live timing thread, they noted it almost immediately. The fact that he was on hards and George on Mediums should have been pretty obvious to them.

Merc. always give the drivers the same tyre strategy.

SKY tends to have De Resta and Davidson listening to team radio to alert the bozos what is actually going on.

Funnily enough, so did the youngsters on radio 5.

Why has Di resta got it in for Albon and Vettel, did they sleep with his mum or something, any opportunity to knock them or point out the smallest error or issue and he's there doing it, maybe it is just jealousy because he was so useless and teams avoided him like the plague because of his moaning.

I have come to terms with Croft shouting at the start and end of the race as that is used as the promo for formula 1 on sky...it is annoying but he will never stop as sky use it to make viewers think wow what an action packed race

The annoying bit is if someone is coming out the pits and goes wheel to wheel with another racer he just gets too shouty and too excited

Like after a safety car restart he goes all loud and excited and lists every cars position. I mean we can see it on the screen. Also he doesnt stop to take a breath and his pitch goes very high.

But the worst has to be him always mentioning the AWS crap. I know amazon pay alot but its so forced by croft it makes him sound so stupid.
