Oh indeed. It was a problem in football too, until the broadcasters and authorities told players they’d be booked for swearing.
The occasional happy “Is that a (bleep) podium?”, as said by Ricciardo last weekend is fine, but “Oh the (bleep) (bleep), that (bleep) (bleep) (bleep) is a (bleep) (bleep)” isnt.
Don’t forget the live audio goes out on F1TV too, and clips quickly end up on YouTube. It looks terrible for the sport and the young audiences they’re trying to attract.
Someone better tell Netflix that swearing isn't acceptable then, and all the people who have become F1 fans after watching Drive to Survive. After more than a hundred lap times deleted yesterday, they’ve revised the rules at turns 1 and 4 overnight such that the car now needs to have some part in contact with the red and white kerb, rather than in contact with the black stuff as it was in P1 and P2.
In totally unrelated news, Lewis straight out of the box into the 1m16s, a second faster than yesterday.

Exactly, it was a practice session, not the last lap of the race. Stroll was the driver ahead, and as much as it might have annoyed Max that he went for a second lap, the Dutchman wasn’t close to being level until he threw it up the inside in the braking zone. Max could have backed off a fraction and carried on, but the red mist got to him and he couldn’t face not being in front.
Rather reminiscent of the Senna/Prost crash at the first corner in Suzuka in 1990 - the one where Senna had decided in advance that Prost wasn’t turning in ahead of him, and the inevitable happened. The sport collectively now disapproves of accidents like that, even though Mr Verstappen Senior and Mr Horner grew up with them.
The foul and offensive language problem does seem to be getting worse - there are kids watching F1, and I think Liberty are trying to attract more of them, and their parents.

Re: MV and Stroll. I used to be a stickler for the rules but nowadays, with the battle for the front places beginning to get tighter, I've got a lot of sympathy for the stewards trying for spectacle. However, it should go for all drivers, which goes back to the rules I suppose. Both were at fault though, but MV had the lion's share.
I don't like offensive language on my TV before the watershed. One way of getting rid of swearing, and the inexcusable name-calling by MV is to delete the previous fastest lap. Do it three times and it's an N grid place drop. That'd show whether it is gratuitous. Which it is.

There wasn't any offensive language on TV though, the radio messages are edited before they're broadcast. I'm surprised if F1 TV aren't doing the same, that's irresponsible on their part as a broadcaster. Re: MV and Stroll. F1TV have live radio channels for each driver, going out in real time and uncensored. The drivers need to be reminded of this. Sandpit Steve said:

Okay LeClerc reporting he can hear Lewis Hamilton conversation on his radio.
I would have thought all the comms were encrypted. But apparently not. What’s to stop people just listening in to all there competitors.
Communications havent been private for years - that's the reason we're allowed to hear all the driver/pit communications.I would have thought all the comms were encrypted. But apparently not. What’s to stop people just listening in to all there competitors.
Ted just explained that all comms are routed through the FIA.
- edit* - that's weird. Did you delete your post?!

If I recall correctly the comms system is a large Riedel system provided as part of the race facilities. A bit of finger trouble when configuring the matrix map would lead to all sorts of interesting issues.Ted just explained that all comms are routed through the FIA.

The drivers aren't responsible for output that's broadcast, F1TV are. If they're being irresponsible enough not to put a delay on it that's their fault.
Back in the 80s, ITV Broadcast a live show at 10.30 on Friday nights from Bernard Manning's club in Manchester, with Bernard as compere. One evening, he was chatting to the audience asking where people were from etc, until obviously having spotted some, asked if there were any guests from Japan.
"Hello, welcome. Lovely to have you here. ........ Pearl Harbor, eh? of a trick that, wasn't it?"
That unfortunately went out live; no time delay, no bleep. I don't think he was on TV much after that, and I guess the Producer might have been seeking new career opportunities too.

I’m pretty sure the driver’s radio was uncensored when ITV started broadcasting it. I think that changed after a Renault driver (Trulli?) telling his engineer his honest opinion of the car. “It’s s**t. It’s f**king s**t.”I don’t think it’s responsible of the broadcaster to have a live uncensored feed of every driver in the heat of the race. The same applies to any high adrenaline sport.

Pretty sure that’s what Vettel wanted to say about half an hour ago... Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
