Raikonnen managed 43 laps on the medium
Bottas was told to pit after 21 laps on the medium

Says it all
There is more than one reason why drivers are called in to change tyres. Verstappen came in a lap before Bottas. He was on meds, one might assume his tyres were likely to be in as good condition as Bottas' were. The reason for RB's tactics was to undercut Bottas as he was holding up Verstappen. This left Merc with a decision to make, an easy decision of course. Do they accept that Verstappen would get second and wait/hope for a (V)SC or respond?

This happens race after race. Of course Merc were going to respond. It doesn't take a lot of working out.

As it happened, all it did was to keep Verstappen in third for longer. The idea that this was some conspiracy to knacker Bottas' race is bewildering.

There was no need to bring in Hamilton just because Bottas had pitted. As you suggest, Raikonnen replaced his meds at 43 laps. I would assume Hamilton might have gone on for further laps had not the VSC come to his aid. On top of that, Merc knew that Hamilton would leave both Verstappen and Bottas for dead once he was in clear air, as indeed he did. What Merc wanted was to have sufficient gap to Verstappen to make the pit stop comfortable.

It would appear that the meds were declared by Pirelli as good for 30 laps. One would assume that this was calculated for the fastest cars driving without husbanding in mind. Hamilton dropped back from Verstappen after a period of being within a second or so. One might assume this was to cool the engine and look after the tyres. If so, it might be that his tyres had a longer competitive period than the 30 laps suggested by Pirelli.

Both Bottas and Hamilton went for fastest lap on the last one. Hamilton put in 3 consecutive fastest laps, culminating in the last one. Bottas dropped away, cooling his tyres probably, and maybe his engine, and charging. I think Bottas was about half a second slower. Hamilton's tyres were knackered, at least his front's appeared so. Bottas - not so much. Yet sill Hamilton thrashed him.

I have to say Racing Point really didn't cover themselves in glory by giving up a podium especially when they already had clear indication that passing was hard on this track.
Yeah, but you have to appreciate the difficult position that Racing Point are in. They can't have the driver that they have just sacked, and who is clearly the faster of the two in the team, beating daddy's little boy. Even though daddy's little boy almost took out some marshals during a safety car period, and then DID take out one of his own pit crew, demonstrating the ineptitude that goes along with his mediocrity.

I wonder just how comfortable, the after race team debriefs are at the moment?

Its going to be interesting next year, to see how the team dynamics pan out. If Vettel is reinvigorated by his move to the new team, and regularly starts beating Lance, how long before he starts told to 'box-box-box' at strange times in the race????

George Russell.

That was a gutting goof. But, I have to say that I'm impressed with his reaction.

No blaming of a bump that wasn't there before. No "I don't know what happened" or some other deflection.

It was a reaction that you tend to see in only the best!

Nowhere to hide though was there. I'm not saying he's not an honest chap, but the I wouldn't judge it on that event.

It's happened to drivers before, but what a silly error.

Interesting reaction from Russell. I’d have been absolutely gutted, apologetic and down on myself as well.

But what would Verstappen have done? Probably have stuck his chin out, shrugged it off and moved on.

I’m not saying which is right. Just interested.
I’m absolutely sure Russell will come back better.

He's learnt not to boot it on cold tyres behind a safety car without being prepared for the consequences - better learnt now than when further up the grid.

Did we get the team radio when he said "Watch this?" [joking...].

He'll get over it. That's part of being a winner (or not) - mental resilience.

That's appalling.
That is crazy, he needs a race ban for that.
Err he was told to catch up.
There appears to be an interesting difference between the video of Vettel and that of Stroll. As soon as Vettel spots the marshalls he backs off and you hear he is no longer accelerating hard in the following corners either - he is more concerned about there being another group of Marshalls than his race. He also radios in that there are Marshalls on the track. Stroll just kept hammering along and the radio is silent.

Wow, on so many levels.

George must be totally gutted at throwing away certain points, but also great to see two other drivers take time out and give him a metaphorical big hug.

Spot the part/car. The debris Bottas had been carrying since lap2.

There's a certain irony in the fact that that's the fastest a bit of Ferrari has gone all year. Not only that; even a Merc goes a lot slower with just a bit of a Ferrari attached.

Even Albon tried what has become known as 'The Ericsson defense' after his spin. Ted Kravitz had to break it to him that nobody had hit him and he had spun all on his own in the media pen.

Its a shame that Mercedes couldn't be bothered to write Valtteri for the pictures, says it all

They look more stupid by throwing away an obvious podium chance. It's also cost them two places in the WCC, and potentially many million$. I highly doubt it was a deliberate act to make Lance look less bad.

If by 'it all' you mean that Mercedes are the Constructor's title winners and Hamilton is the Driver's champion, then yes.

I know it's not a mathematical certainty but it's near enough, and I'm very tired of people who continue to believe that there is some kind of conspiracy in the team to keep Bottas looking like the second best driver of the two hehe

Oh there's a 'sabotage Perez' conspiracy in racing Point as well is there?
