One other question to ask is how would a Formula E car have faired in this accident. Given that an F1 engine and box weigh around 90kg and he has 20kg of fuel on board.
A Formula E battery and motor is over 250kg sitting right behind you. It would have ended up slicing deeper into the trajectory of travel before ripping off given its higher mass.

If there is something positive to take from this for the future of F1 and indeed ICE cars in general is that low speed accidents a battery are not going to be problem. It is the higher speed/higher mass accidents that are not only harder to contain in a crash. But also harder to survive given that you are dealing with solid metal plates weighing twice as much that don't deform like an alloy engine does, I would never want to be in an accident in this car in anything other than city speeds if I am being honest.


I see the move by BMW, Audi to leave Formula E and Porsches move to synthetic fuels being the lifeline for F1 and high performance cars in general. Yes your average egg shaped suv pod will drive you within your geofenced network. But sport is still liquid based.

Lauda's reaction to his own "horror accident" was precisely why I said that there was every reason why Gosjean would most likely race again. As has been said many times, racing drivers are not cut from the same cloth as most of us. They have fierce belief in their own abilities and when they DO have an accident, most of them WANT to get back into a car so that they can prove to themselves that they have still got it.

What happened to Stirling Moss is an interesting permutation on this. He wanted to get back into a car as quickly as he could so he could assess himself following his "horror crash". This he duly did - and then decided to retire. In later years he admitted that he had returned to driving too quickly and that he should have given himself at least six more months so he could properly assess himself.

Indeed, many, many years ago when I said I hated someone, my older brother told me to focus my hatred on people like Pol Pot and Idi Amin and to reserve judgment on others until I had actually met them.

Definitely something still wrong with Romains left foot. In a BBC piece he talks about it being trapped and I guess yanking it out might have bruised things/damaged tendons, or he burnt it on the barrier.

I think that is highly unlikely, but you can never say it's impossible to happen. The investigation will produce some interesting info, hopefully that is made public.
You would be amazed how much compression these tanks can stand, I've seen one crash where the fuel cell was in the boot of a GT car and the rear panel of the car was pretty much against the rear passenger bulkhead, with the cell squashed between, and it didn't fail.
All the F1 fuel cells are made a stones throw from my house by ATL, they make all the cells for WEC, F2, Radical etc etc these guys know what they are doing, I dare say the FIA will want access to all the ATL stuff on Romains cell

I use ATL, Premier and Advanced Fuel Systems cells. They are lifed for 5 years and then you can get them recertified for another 2 years, then they go in the bin.

It's usually the worst job on the car to install or remove a fuel cell, my arms are usually red raw afterwards from getting the damn thing in and then building all the internals up with your arms through a small aperture. The current F1 car cells are incredibly complex inside due to the very high G the cars pull, they tend to use lift pumps with an electric feed into the cell. I always try and design them so they don't need any pumps inside the tank using baffles and one way valves, I can get this to work down to needing about 0.5 litre of fuel, which is pretty good for a car pulling over 2G in braking and cornering.

Back in the day they were made by Marston, Continental and Goodyear as they were more rubber based construction, these were mainly used in aircraft and then the racing teams started to use them. I've restored some F1 cars that were still being raced in the USA on their original fuel cells from the 70's, mental.

Inside the fuel cell they are packed with a fire resistant foam, the idea of this is to prevent the weight of fuel sloshing about but also to slow the flow of fuel out of the cell if you get a burst cell or fire.
