Without reading the whole thread but looking at the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ7_En2xEm4
who is the commentator shouting at the beginning?
and the one half way through talking about a tyre going over the barrier when it's clearly a wheel?
To be fair, it was a tyre, just still attached to the wheel smile

Wasn't it Martin Brundle who ended up upside-down after the first lap of a Grand Prix? The race was stopped, he got out and ran back to the pits hoping to use the spare car for the restart.
Melbourne 1996 Australian Grand Prix . They called that bit of track “Brundle’s runway” afterwards.

All the F1 fuel cells are made a stones throw from my house by ATL, they make all the cells for WEC, F2, Radical etc etc these guys know what they are doing, I dare say the FIA will want access to all the ATL stuff on Romains cell
I use ATL, Premier and Advanced Fuel Systems cells. They are lifed for 5 years and then you can get them recertified for another 2 years, then they go in the bin.

It's usually the worst job on the car to install or remove a fuel cell, my arms are usually red raw afterwards from getting the damn thing in and then building all the internals up with your arms through a small aperture. The current F1 car cells are incredibly complex inside due to the very high G the cars pull, they tend to use lift pumps with an electric feed into the cell. I always try and design them so they don't need any pumps inside the tank using baffles and one way valves, I can get this to work down to needing about 0.5 litre of fuel, which is pretty good for a car pulling over 2G in braking and cornering.

Back in the day they were made by Marston, Continental and Goodyear as they were more rubber based construction, these were mainly used in aircraft and then the racing teams started to use them. I've restored some F1 cars that were still being raced in the USA on their original fuel cells from the 70's, mental.

Inside the fuel cell they are packed with a fire resistant foam, the idea of this is to prevent the weight of fuel sloshing about but also to slow the flow of fuel out of the cell if you get a burst cell or fire.
I don't envy you on a fuel cell change that's for sure!

Interview with Romain. I'd assumed he was out more easily than this, although it explains the slightly longer time than might have been expected in perfect conditions.

Still so relieved we're getting to hear from him.

It's interesting that there was space to climb out the side of the halo whilst wearing a helmet. I wonder if that was an intentional part of the design or a lucky coincidence. In hindsight it would have been a sensible requirement.

I can remember driving on M6 and a truck was ablaze on the hard shoulder of the opposite carriageway. Traffic on our side has slowed to about 50, IIRC we were in lane 2 or 3 and even though we had the central reservation and other three lanes of the opposing side between us and the fire, you could feel the heat through the side windows of the car.

All those guys who ran up to the wreck were incredibly brave. The heat, even in overalls, must have been utterly terrifying.

Well, based on that, if he was driving an indycar with the aero screen he would be dead now.

I didn't interpret that he came out the side of the halo - more that if he went straight upwards he hit the barrier, so had to go at an angle and contort himself a bit because it was quite tight.

That's how I understand it as well. Looking at images of a halo there simply doesn't look like there is room for a helmet to squeeze through between tub and halo. And the gap is at it's widest right at the front which would take some serious distortion to fold your body through.

He didn’t come out the side he came out the top. The whole car was just at an angle so might have seemed like it.

Not sure who I saw interviewed but they said it’s not possible to get out between the halo and car.

He got out like this apparently;

I don’t think he would have known where the hell he was to be honest.
