A half decent driver in a good team can win the f2 and f3 titles. Doesnt mean they will be a great F1 driver. They come along very rarely.
The much maligned Latifi has won 6 f2 races. I guess in a better car he would look a bit better than he does now.
A lot of the hype surrounding Piastri centres around the fact that he won the F3 title at his first attempt, then the F2 title at his first attempt. The much maligned Latifi has won 6 f2 races. I guess in a better car he would look a bit better than he does now.
Latifi had 3 years in F2 and his best championship finish was 2nd in his final year.
Other drivers who won F2 (or equivalent) at their first attempt since 2005?
Charles LeClerc
George Russell
Nico Hulkenburg
Lewis Hamilton
Nico Rosberg
All F1 drivers......
Of those, only LeClerc and Russell won the F3 series on first attempt aswell.
Winning F2 is not a guarantee of a good F1 driver (several examples) but the way you win it is a good indication.

just seem to exist to try and hook sponsorship when someone from an obscure but rich country mysteriously does well.

It's certainly a good indicator.F1 drivers who won GP2/F2 at the first attempt - 6, including 2 WDC and 2 widely-tipped future WDC.
F1 drivers who won GP2/F2 after multiple attempts - 11, with a combined total of 2 F1 wins between them (Maldonado and Gasly).
F1 drivers who did GP2/F2 without winning series - 34, combined total of 3 F1 wins between them (1 for Kovalainen, 2 for Perez).
Three GP2/F2 champions after multiple attempts have never even raced in F1.

Daniel Ricciardo (straight from Formula Renault 3.5 to F1)
Carlos Sainz (straight from Formula Renault 3.5 to F1)
Sebastian Vettel (straight from Formula Renault 3.5 to F1)
I think its established you dont win f1 titles without being in the fastest car. There are not many in the 20 drivers that would manage it without failing at critical moments.
But enough bashing these hopefuls. Pastrami should get a go. Must be a reason for Aussies to hang on in quiet desperation.
I dont think Alpines trajectory is as promising as say Aston Martin so if they exit Alonso it would be a delight watching him snapped up by AM and beating the trecherous french team every week.

Hmm Stroll Snr and Alonso. What could possibly go wrong with that? But enough bashing these hopefuls. Pastrami should get a go. Must be a reason for Aussies to hang on in quiet desperation.

Grojean has unfinished business, I reckon that he will back... one day.
I think he is having far more fun in the US. So many more people to crash into.Gassing Station | Formula 1 | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
