Official comment from F2 website:

The FIA advises that incident occurred during the FIA Formula 2 Feature Race start today, 05/12/21, in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, involving car #10, Théo Pourchaire, and car #14, Enzo Fittipaldi.

The drivers were immediately attended to by emergency and medical crews. The drivers were conscious and extricated by the attending medical crews. Both have been transferred by ambulance and helicopter to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital, Jeddah.
Lazenby saying they are both OK was rather dumb.

Yes, that was a dick thing to say, given the nature of the incident.

But about par for the fool.

I’ve just seen a replay, a home video from the paddock club. Fittipaldi’s car looked a bit of a mess, not a surprise that he has suspected leg injuries. A little reminiscent of, but less severe than, Correa’s car in the Spa accident. The chassis in today’s accident held up better.

Wishing both drivers a swift recovery.

Seen some unconfirmed Twitter comments suggesting Fittipaldi has a broken ankle, but that's just gossip / chat at the moment.

Seems entirely believable given he must have been pushing hard on one pedal or the other at the moment of impact. That energy has to go somewhere.

I think whatever the details its inevitable that his legs have suffered from the impact one way or another. I'm sure not to serious/permanent extent though.

It's been a very dramatic Sunday at this circuit hasn't it.

Frankly if it's only a broken ankle I think think that's got to be counted as a win. Given the closing speed involved it could (and not long ago would) have been a very nasty accident.

”Hey everyone thanks for all the messages. Enzo is awake/alert and resting at the hospital. He has a fracture in his right heel but thankfully things are much better than what we all expected. Thank you to the FIA, the team and all the medical staff here in Saudi Arabia.”

https://mobile.twitter.com/PiFitti/status/14676572... - Pietro Fittipaldi

That’s great news, after what looked to be a shocking accident.

Indeed. Testament to the structural front impact safety of modern F1 cars and the regulations brought in so far to get to this point.

Very pleased to hear that - it could have been so much worse.

Taking a break from the partisan ranting on the other threads.

It really is a crime Piastri doesn’t have a route into F1.

Young Jack Doohan is making a bit of a splash. Always nice to see success for drivers who have made their way through British F4.

Yep Zhou has needed 3 attempts to get 3rd in f2 and he still might not get it. Piastri won each championship on the way up at the first time of asking. F2 nearly a done deal. But a big 2nd gen name or mega money talks before talent. And with Zhou being Chinese f1 want him in the main show

He (Piastri) was absolutely solid in quali today - never really locked in trouble, made no mistakes.

He may have to stay in F2 next year and destroy everyone (again) to get picked up by an F1 team. It would be a shame to lose another talent like this to IndyCar, or some other lower-league series - it's bad enough Ilott couldn't get a drive and Piastri is much better (which galls me as i'm a huge Ilott fan).

Isn’t the F2 champion still banned from the following year’s championship?

Yes, it sucks that there’s no room for Piastri at the top table.

You are correct - I had completely forgotten that.

That really sucks for Piastri then.

Hmmmmm..

..not sure about how much read across to F1 there will be given F2 tyre management needs, but I'm not seeing closer racing in F2 as a result of the circuit changes - a few on track overtakes, but getting into and making use of DRS still seems a struggle.

I’m sure it’s been said before, but Alex Brundle is a great commentator. “This is connoisseur racing”. I’ll have to remember that next time I have to explain why I claim to enjoy an apparently boring race.

And as I press submit , Piastri takes the place he needs.

Indeed - I remain unconvinced that the track mods are in anyway going to prevent Abu Dhabi being bit of snooze-fest, with lots of Crofty shouting about possibilities and maybes and ifs.

Top marks to Piastri - he could have just sat behind Shwartzman, but decided to show him who was boss.
