Had a great (if slightly warm weekend), also witnessed, after many races, my first big accident up close & personal. Max went anto the tyres about 20-30metres from us,, the impact was huge, silence fell for what felt like an age, until thankfully Max emerged shaken, but in tact.

I witnessed a big shunt at Silverstone in free practice in 1993. Mark Blundell aquaplaned off the circuit right in front of me at (the old) Abbey. Probably about 150MPH, and no tyre barrier or anything, just a steel Armco.

Then, as he was getting himself out of the car, the two McLarens of Senna and Andretti appeared, unsighted, and darted either side of him. It was, for a moment, very scary.

Wasn’t you flying one of the Red Arrows was it? smile
Sadly not. A rather less exciting machine. I probably had a few more seconds to enjoy the view though!

Aha!

I was thinking of this moment a few weeks ago but just couldn't remember when it was or which drivers were involved. I was starting to wonder if I'd imagined it or seen it on a film or something.

I think the rush to leave immediately after the race is such a popular choice now that sometimes you just gain nothing. In fact you can sometimes put yourself in a worse situation don’t you? No exaggeration, half of becketts grandstand jumped up as soon as half the field crossed the line. The track was closed to spectators so must assume they were rushing to beat traffic.

Granted I have not experienced the hours and hours of queues out, but we left 2 hours after the flag and enjoyed a beer, music, driver interviews etc. Then drove out of the car park with a small queue.
I do agree, but took my Dad this year and he is obsessed with getting on the road as soon as the race is finished.

I have vowed that next time I go to Silverstone, I am camping on the Sunday night and enjoying the after race party.

Had forgotten about that one, God only knows what Blundell thought, as he got out and looked back at the two McLarens bearing down on him.

This is in the days before the light box flag signals too, would the drivers have even seen yellow flags being waved in the rain? Thankfully today, the race director can switch on red lights everywhere at the touch of a button.

Anyone else been pinged after Silverstone? Was from the Sunday, me and my mate have both had been pinged on the track and trace app, though I’ve done a lateral flow and it’s negative.

Yep, got pinged last night. I was as cautious as I could be while there but it was inevitable really. Tested our whole house and we're all negative so hopefully we just have to wait it out.

Annoyingly (and ironically) it means I have to cancel the appointment for my second jab. banghead

I can't see any way you could possibly avoid a ping at Silverstone. You will have GPS 'connected' with literally tens of thousands of people, and it only takes one of them to test positive to generate a ping.

It's just like the football. All the ones leaving early to 'beat the traffic' end up being the traffic.

Wait til the end and its relatively easy to leave.

Not sure that's how it works. We went to Goodwood last weekend and Silverstone this weekend and nothing has pinged up on for us

It uses Bluetooth.

You have to be within close proximity of someone who tested positive for 15 minutes for you to receive a ping.

It doesn't use GPS or ping you as this poster suggests. If you get a ping, you have been close to someone with covid for a significant period of time.

Not surprised there were a few there that were positive. Too easy to knowingly or unknowingly go in whilst positive.

That's what I personally did. I meant for people who had the app.

I didn't realise it worked by Bluetooth I assumed it'd be GPS. Even with Bluetooth you only need to queue for a drink or sit in a grandstand near someone and you're going to get a ping.

For those who camped, where, and how was it?

Have been in woodlands every time and while it looked a bit forlorn with the entertainment, it made us realise we don't really need it. 10 hours or so trudging round in the sun is enough. Must be getting old

Someone with covid, and thats the bloody point of the app. What else do you expect it to do?

It's there to give you a warning you may have been exposed to covid, so until tested, act as though you have it.

It's an app to help reduce spread of a virus. The problem is that people only see the negative effects on them if they get pinged, not the positive benefits to society, so more people are going to turn it off. End result, more viral spread.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. I understand what the app does, all I was saying is if you're an app user and went to Silverstone there's clearly going to be a very high chance of getting pinged due to 140,000 people being there.

Obviously, mix with people, you have more chance of exposure to a virus.

The app is there to inform you if you were in close proximity to someone who has tested positive.

What's difficult or confusing about that?

Omg stop, it’s boring.

You guys know that there should have been no COVID there right? Negative tests 48 hours prior or 2 jabs. Of course some pricks would slip through, but it was meant to be a clean event.
